Eucalypts drop bark (and limbs), not leaves, so they don't provide sunlight in the (shrinking) winter. Whereas deciduous trees provide shade in the hot months and let the sun through in the cold months. Pertinent if they are planted on the north of the property.

I used to live in a leafy suburb but now most trees are gone and my yard stands out still having a few large trees in it. Poor possums have no where to sleep so one moved into a open shed to sleep. I will have to build them a some boxes sooner or later to live in.

when i was a kid houses were built on 1/4 acre blocks and almost every home had at least 1 big spreading tree, ours had several, we loved climbing about in them.

today we see houses with maybe a 3 metre back yard and just enough room down the sides to wheel a bin!

if they do manage to have a reasonable back yard in goes the pool!

greed, smaller blocks more profit

Just read the article and just realised I was talking to someone about this in january. My neighbours have removed most of the trees in their yards recently but my yard is still 50-60% shade from large trees and I felt it was slightly hotter than usual in the shade where it used to be cooler in pevious years.

Unfortunately I live in an area where most will tell you they don't like trees. Everytime a house is sold the new owner will remove a few more trees. Kind of bugs me when some make comments about how many trees I have. Trees that are in unsafe condition or close to a house should be removed but then no one is replanting anything which is a shame. .

Our council has to be blamed for a bit of this. They are still allowing new estates to be built (stage 5 water restrictions coming up very soon) and these estates are full of shiny new roofs minimal garden/lawn and absolutely not a tree to be seen. Hot boxes is what I call them,
They do have ac but I hope the owners have the money to pay the bills!
