Corona Virus Panic Buying

As shoppers prepare for a coronavirus pandemic there’s one item people can’t buy enough of – toilet paper.

While many are stocking up on pantry staples such as pasta and flour, a new photo taken inside a Costco store shows this is the one product people are most afraid of running out.

“Can someone please tell me WHY these idiots are panic buying all the toilet paper ???” the caption reads.

But they’re not alone. Scores of shoppers have been sharing on social media how toilet roll sections at their supermarkets have been decimated.

The hysteria comes despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison telling people today not to panic buy.

“Just before coming into this press conference earlier today, I spoke to both Coles and Woolworths, just to get an update on their arrangements, and I appreciate their response and the steps they are taking to assure people and their own customers,” he said.

“They would send the same message I am sending you today. It is important that people just go about their business and their normal processes in a calm manner.

They had spoken to me about the arrangements they have in place around their supply lines and things like this, but I would just urge people to be going about their business in the normal way when it comes to those matters.”

Leading Australian toilet paper manufacturers have also told news.com.au there is no need to panic as we won’t be running out of rolls anytime soon.

Called into my local Coles this arvo and noticed that the whole aisle where the loo paper is located was completely bare..never seen anything like this before!! lucky the other Coles near me had some left..

The old man went to a lot of trouble to cut up the newspaper into manageable squares and hang them on a hook next to the toilet.

He was good in that way, was the old man! Used to give us a regular belting, but considerate in other ways, lol.

Once a few start panic buying, everyone else would want to stock up in case there's none there when they need some. They're not panic buying, they're just making sure they don't run out. I only go shopping once a month so I usually have a good supply but I wouldn't want to suddenly find there's none around.

It just shows it doesn't take much to start an avalanche.

Not a hoax but I do think the government is using it as a diversion from the sports rorts and the mess Angus has made and to distract from how awful their drought and bush fire relief has been.

No, I think the govt needs to be seen to follow the containment practices of other affected countries and work in tandem with them. . I don't see any diversion gong on here and quite honestly wish ppl wouldn't try to point score politically. This is an international issue and Morrison is doing what any PM should be doing in my view. I saw on the News just now (sorry no link) that already tourist bookings for Australia have plummeted by 30%..

We need all the guidance we can get.

Was that before or after the bushfires? My understanding is that tourism has already taken a big hit from the bushfires.

Doesn't mean the government needs to authorise locking up people who might have COVID-19, or that they're not running as hard as they can to distract from all the other issues they have, like using the Federal Treasury as a personal bank.

Thing is...it's a sad thing that australia has to rely on tourism for it's economy.

We had industry once and we have resources...albeit sold off to foriegn interests

I saw this news story earlier, and actually considered starting a thread, but I was rather busy this arvo.

Anyway, I was going to ask if it is panic shopping or just people doing there normal shop, or should I say normal costco shop for isolated shoppers. Did anyone ask any of the shoppers, if they were stocking up because of the corona virus.

Now the reason being is that I am a costco shopper, when I get the chance. That is my nearest costco is about about 5hrs drive away and I might only get there a couple of times a year, so normally buy a couple of bulk packs and of course any friends or relies who find out your going to costco all seem to put in orders for bulk date rolls. So by the time I finally leave costco and start the long drive back home, my truck is usually chockers and a large portion of the load is date roll and paper towels.
