Up Tick?

where has this new (to me anyway) term come from?

i keep hearing people being interviewed saying "Up Tick" about things.

blah blah blah thats an Up Tick!

to me its a new bit of spin wording dreamt up by a media relations person teaching pollies ect how to answer questions

"throw in a few ""Up Ticks"" mate, just to make ya point its a great idea"

As in there has been an "uptick" of new buyers,non payers etc.

I've never heard it before.

There seem to be new buzzwords every day, I certainly keep track of them.

Sounds like something American. I hate these buzzwords as suddenly they are used ad nauseum.

I mean Up Tick? Clearly you can't have a Down Tick.

My other pet hate is 'Going Forward' tacked on to the end of statements (much loved in businesses and sport).

What's the reverse comment - Going Backward? Actually that would do to describe the government.

That would explain it they can't even spell and have changed them to their version of the Enlish language and

there are lots of words that have been added to dictionaries.

Most of them are from US "speech" including slang words.

They include of variation of different current words so could become a nightmare for schooling.

American professional jargon from 1938 , not street American slang .

of financial services - means a small increase upwards or improvement ie " increase in the price of a financial instrument since the preceding transaction"

Seems spreading to more common usage in Australia...

It annoys me that there are a lot of sheep in this country who have to follow everything American, so we can act like America's little brother. In the meantime our Australian identity is disappearing. I am hearing "downtown" a lot lately. Also many people wrongly referring to our dollars as "bucks" which is an abbreviation for the American greenback. On the subject of pet peeves, it annoys me that many reporters and politicians cannot put a sentence together without several ums and ahs, and I can only wonder if it is because the brain has to catch up with the tongue.

we have been subject to americanization since ww2

most phrases have a basis in some fact, like buck for money ect

but 'Up Tick' is just a nothing

if you have a 'to do' list, you TICK things off as you do them

ive never 'Up Ticked' anything ever!

if an idea is a good idea you can say it gets the 'Tick of aproval'

but no one ever said 'thats a great idea, give it an up tick'

its just to me an anoying thing to keep hearing supposedly intelligent people saying.

its to me as bad as hearing a person say 'like' a hundred times in a 1 minute sentence.

re the ums and ahs.. they give the mouth time to catch up with the brain...

re Aus being the "little brother" of the US...it's more like the Chinese put it...we're the dog of the US...they whislte, we come...look how we're putting in a protest march about the recent race va police wars there...I mean, really!

I don't mind buzzword. It's a single noun with an easily grasped meaning, instead of using a more wordy phrase.

As for up tick and going forward......you don't NEED these words. Especially going forward which is usually tacked on to the end of sentence where the meaning was already clear.

Also seems every new Govt scheme or dept name change , ie search mygov using duckduckgo search engine and click more results

As for 'buzzword", I don't mind it. Back in the day, I think we used to use the term "word on the street".

But we've "moved forward" from that.because we converse on the internet these days,not on the street or over the back fence...

Times change and so do expressions.

I guess "moving forward" kind of means what we used to say as "what we'll do from now on"...which works for me either way.
