Cook Statue Defaced

Police are investigating after a statue of Captain Cook was defaced in Randwick on the weekend.

It is believed black spray paint was used to deface the statue overnight on Saturday.

Pictures taken of the statue on Sunday show the phrase "no pride in genocide" and the outline of an Aboriginal flag drawn onto the monument.

The graffiti was cleaned by Randwick Council on Sunday.

The incident comes as a statue of Captain Cook in Hyde Park was also graffitied with black spray paint on the weekend with the messages "no pride in genocide" and "sovereignty never ceded".

What does that mean, defaced with black paint? Did they paint Cpt. Cooks face black?

It sounds more as if a message was sprayed on in black paint. Completely inappropriate though. Cook was an amazing explorer, some of his legacy in mapping only disappeared off the charts in about the 1970s.

It means they remain upset and angry because, in their eyes, Cook invaded their land, and those white invaders who followed murdered their ancestors, raped the women, beheaded the dead, pillaged their land, used them as slaves, stole their babies and forced a system upon them that they struggle with till this day.

This is the era when black lives matter. I'm surprised you had to ask - it's a no brainer!

But Cook didn't engage in any of that!

He travelled along the eastern coastline of Australia and chartered it, and continued on into the Pacific.

"At Cook's original landing contact was made with the local Australian Aboriginal inhabitants. As the ship sailed into the harbour, they noticed Aborigines on both of the headlands. At about 2 pm they put the anchor down near a group of six to eight huts. Two Aborigines, a younger and an older man, came down to the boat.[42] They did not accept the offer of gifts from Cook, whose lack of knowledge of Aboriginal custom may have prevented him from behaving acceptably in such exchanges. A musket was fired over their heads, which wounded the older man slightly, and he ran towards the huts. He came back with other men and threw spears at Cook's men, although they did no harm. They were chased off after two more rounds were fired.[42] The adults had left, bu"t Cook found several Aboriginal children in the huts, and left some beads with them as a gesture of friendship.[42]

On 6 May 1770, the Endeavour left Botany Bay and sailed north past an inlet "wherein there appeared to be safe anchorage". Cook named it Port Jackson, today generally known as Sydney Harbour."

He did not invade the land and kill off the inhabitants. That was left to the subsequent British settlers, who had no difficulty in using the white convicts as slave labour, so they didn't need to enslave the blacks during that era.

Agree this happened later once convict transport to Australia had ceased.

And as to the protesers:

"Xiaoran Shi, 28, and Charmaine Morrison-Mills, 27, allegedly defaced the statue at about 4am on Sunday.

The friends were granted bail on Sunday and will appear before Sydney's Downing Centre Court on July 2.

Ms Shi is a part-time staffer within NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge's office and runs Sniff Off, a collaboration between the Mr Shoebridge and the NSW Young Greens against police use of sniffer dogs."

I'm not sure what you are driving at?

Cook visited Australia, eventually returned to Britain and reported his discovery. I have seen facsimiles of Joseph Banks's notes. He described the Aboriginals as sub-human creatures and used very demeaning and offensive adjectives in his descriptions. The British then followed his path and the rest is history. Aborigines view Cook as the first invader and the person who was responsible for the later invasion by those people who followed.

And what is the agenda of the defacers and protesters? Did you not see the videos of the protesters? Thousands were white. They support black lives and in many instances the history behind why it matters. You do not have to be black to understand the reasons why Aborigines are upset. But for me, there is a big difference between understanding and supporting actions driven by hate and anger.

Further antagonised as black fellas do not like images of dead people ? however once again i do not think the defacing is by black fellas , more like over the top brindle people. While having their thoughts I am of the opinion that black fellas could not be bothered unless located on top of a known specific sensitive site , as is a white fella thing.

If others take offense , they should rather erect their own monuments - like sculpted 3 dimensional dreamtime renderings along a similar presentation as their paintings - story telling and authentic , but then there would be no issues.

Well that's just rubbish. I'm sure the Aborigines view it that way because some white ppl organisations influenced the to think that way.
Cook was no invader, he was an explorer, and not the first white man to set foot on Australian soil, or the Great Southern Land, as it was then known .

The Portuguese and the Dutch had known of at least part of it, and had made contact with the inhabitants around the 1600s.
Britain was keen to have a presence in the Pacific and sent Cook out to map the Great Southern Land for possible future colonisation ahead of the French, who were also eyeing it off.

So if it hadn't been the Brits, it would have been the French, the Dutch, or the Portugese claiming it. Either way, a lose lose sittuation for the indigenous population, as we have seen from other European and British colonies.

Yes, a large proportion were white and many were truly supportive and caringof the Aborigines. Indeed, every Australian taxpayer is very supportive of the Aboriginal communities.

Many others were there simply there to piggyback their cause onto the BLM protest via the Aboriginal ppl. So once again using the Aboriginal ppl as their servants.

You do not have to be black to understand the reasons why Aborigines are upset.

Not sure what you mean by that, but organisations who use incidents to whip up hatred between communities for their own agendas need to be shut down, IMO. Social Media is a huge contributor.

You may view the opinions of the indigenous people of Australia as "rubbish", and you may divide non-indigenous Australians into whatever categories you like. But I'm pretty sure you don't speak on behalf of "every Australian Taxpayer". BTW, are you referring to the Indigenous taxpayers too? Yes, "there are two sides to every story". And the Aborigines have theirs.

Is it possible to seek knowledge of history and consider as personal heritage - then there maybe considered value that enables appreciation of other citrizens generational heritage

In time maybe even considering such as part of one's own identity even if not having physical genetic links , being justified by equity in lving life upon this island continent and feelings of humanity
