Vinyl sales continue to grow

Vinyl sales continue to grow, but does music sound better on a record or digital streaming?

give me a break, go back to vinyl, not this little black duck

i remenber vinyl only too well

needing to buy a new copy because we had a hot day or it developed a skip

not being able to replace a record because 'its out of print'

nope, replaced everything and then some with CDs, still have em stored away.

transferred them all onto hard drive, made back ups.

play perfect every time, never wear out

still buy the odd CD, but not often

Vinyl is much easier to keep clean than carpet.

For many years when the kids where growing up we had a beautiful old stereo / radiogram on the deck out the back of the house. The teenage kids would love to have their mates come around and play mum and dads " Old Bangers " for " gaths " ( gatherings for us oldies ) Prince, Midnight Oil, ABBA and Hoodo Gurus all got a play.

My son recently came and pinched a lot of my old vinyl to use as " samples " to make rap beats. Everything old is new again.

It doesn't matter what medium you use. If your system is only worth around $1000 or less, the music is going to sound 'unengaging',to use a polite term.

By definition audio transferred through a stylus cannot have the same fidelity as a digital recording.

I still have most of the vinyl I purchased.
Some didn't make it.
I haven't bought any music since the eighties.
Never owned a CD player or anything newer.
Both my vehicles are so old that they have tape players
Lost all my tapes somehow in one of my moves.
Just listen to the radio

Although my car is equipped with an awesome Apline deck, i just listen to the radio these days too

And search for new stuff on YouTube

Yah, Moyclon, my ol' Sansui still belts out a terrific sound

Those old AU Sansuis are pretty good. I uaed to have one in the '70's.
As far as hi fi goes, if you happen to be in Melbourne in October, drop in to the hi fi show. You'll be amazed at how much music you hear from a high end setup. By that I mean you'll hear stuff that cheaper setups don't reveal. And the gear on display is beautiful to look at as well.

It's from the 70s or 80s before they went cheap, has these amazing 4 way speakers with built in sub woofers

Think it was in the 90s I bought a Sansui CD player for it at Japan HiFi

They showed me some of their personal equipment in the back room, blew me away!

I've still got all my vinyl records and even some 78s. Also got lots of CDs.

Does the music sound better on vinyl? That depends. In the early days of CDs I bought some 'backups' of favourite records. The sound on those CDs is well, flat, compared to their vinyl counterparts.

I imagine the quality has improved but a LOT also depends on the equipment you are using to play them. I have some music stored on computer but the speakers aren't top quality.

My last good stereo system bit the dust and components of it couldn't be repaired so I had to quickly buy a new one but at the time was limited by budget...and it also had to play cassettes which a lot don't. I am not happy with it, though because I kept the old speakers its better than it should be. However, sometime I will have the spend the money on something better. Sigh.

I still buy vinyl because there's a lot of music out there that still hasn't made it to CDs and I prefer a 'hard copy' than downloads. In any case some of them aren't on downloads either. I collect mostly late 50s - mid 60s music with an occasional 70s or 80s purchase.

I just dusted off my turntable and playing a $1 opp shop sourced late 60's pop record . Sounds as clear and good to my ears as very strong reception FM radio, so i am pleased

The only irritation is changing sides of the disk every 15 minutes or so., but that can be easily resolved with legal copy to digital format media including editing time between tracks etc. The added bonus being at the same time optimising qualities for personal preferences

So I like vinyl records

I 'm hopeful enough of the young people who discovered records lately will continue to support it. So far, it has survived tapes, CDs and digital downloads, which leaves me mind boggling. The challenge is to keep the revenue adequate to make it economically viable. To keep our old turntables running, we must at least be able to buy the stylus's and the parts needed. It will be awesome to continue to see new records being created too.

Vinyl sounds better than digital but you have to spend more to get that sound. Vinyl like magnetic tape being analogue will contain a capture of the sound recorded on it. Digital like CD and download have a numerical representation of the music. Some purists will say that with digital it misses parts of the music. I guess you'd have to have a trained ear for that. Digital is able to capture a broader dynamic range than vinyl so there's some compression involved there. So it wins there but it doesn't have the detail.

Anyway adherents to both will argue their point until the other one shuts up. At the end of the day which will be around in 500 years? That Lionel Ritchie or Bonnie Raitt album if dug up will still be playable if stored right. Possibly some of the new film that is used to store analogue and other data may survive. The CD will have oxidised and the digital data will have become corrupted over time by whatever outside influences are about.

Nothing competes with vinyl IMO. I have heard some of the mono recordings of Beatles' albums on a high end record player. I heard things that cannot be reproduced any other way. The musicality is breathtaking. But of course you need the right equipment and have to set the stylus perfectly. When you get it right tho, it is sublime.

Holds the mark and looks great. It doesn't squeeze the jacket too tightly or anything, and has no trouble keeping all the sleeves. It's so quick to slip the jacket in open is winder. Difficult to beat for under 5 bucks.

The car decals at topvinylcutters gives me a greif for not making a message of 300 characters. She is a creator of a napkin. Difficult to extend ... Also pictured anyway is just what I happened to have when I decided to write.
