When a town isn't a town

Local councils have put their support behind small towns in central Victoria, after proposed changes that will see towns with populations of less than 200 stripped of their official status.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has decreed that places with fewer than 200 people per square kilometre according to 2011 census data, will no longer be classified as towns.

Villages, boroughs, hamlets or small towns have been suggested as alternative titles.

It is unclear which small towns in central Victoria will be affected until the formula is applied.

However, a survey conducted by Fairfax shows many towns could be under threat.

City of Greater Bendigo councillor Rod Fyffe said he was concerned about the impact the changes could have.

“When you lose that identity it makes it very difficult to make advances at a government level and at a not-for-profit level,” he said.

“People are more likely to support towns than any other thing they want to call it instead.”

Loddon Shire mayor Geoff Curnow said the council would support the many small towns that made up the shire.

It seems like an unnecessary change to me .

I'm sure they would Carl regardless of what they are called.

I wonder if they will change the 'Tidy town' or just rule these non town towns out of the competition?

I read that this years is 30th anniversary of the Tidy Towns Awards.Doesn't seem that long ago

Probably just rule them out. Like other cutbacks left right & centre.

A Hamlet is already a name for a town without a Church...

I find this thread rather unnecessary.

Seems fair enough to me, if a town has less than 200 people than it should be called a Village... My home town has a population of around 1800 and is still a town...

There are smaller areas around with around 200 (and less) and everyone just refers to those as Villages anyway..

I don't see what the fuss is about

I live in a town of 11 000+ residents. A place with 200 people, doesn't really qualify as a town if compared to towns of the size I live in.

I can't see that it would make any difference being called a village or a town anyway, only for official/administation purposes.

Village and hamlet are quiet appealing names.
