Have you heard or seen AI stuff being used around you, to you, on you?

If you suspect you’ve spotted AI material in action, or know you have, post it here.

I’d like to kick things off by mentioning the new Bankwest TV ad. That voice-over is sending AI vibes to me. Has anyone here noticed the same thing?

Yes, lots of photos of retired people, obviously AI….health funds, retirement homes etc….

That's an interesting observation about the Bankwest TV ad! You're right; there's been quite a bit of discussion around the voice-over used in their new "Just Enough Bank" campaign.

Many people, including industry experts, have indeed noted the distinct AI-like quality of the voice. In fact, the creative agency behind the ads, Bear Meets Eagle On Fire, has confirmed that they intentionally used an AI voiceover for the campaign.

Here's what's been reported about it:

Intentional Choice: The agency stated that they experimented with various voices, aiming for something "more scientific than emotional" and found that the "monotone, unattached audio" of the AI voice worked best to juxtapose with the visuals and add a unique, and at times humorous, element to the observations in the ads.
Disconnected and Dispassionate: They described the chosen AI voice as "disconnected" and "dispassionate," which they felt made the campaign more memorable.
Not About the Technology Initially: Interestingly, the agency clarified that the decision wasn't driven by a desire to use AI technology itself, but rather because the characteristics of that specific AI voice happened to fit the creative concept they were aiming for.

So, your "AI vibes" were spot on! It's a deliberate creative choice in the Bankwest advertising campaign.

Generally speaking, AI-generated voices are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are being used in various applications.

It grates on me - it grates so much that I feel repulsed by the entire thing. Creative preference my derrière; it’s the cost among other things. Real humans who are gifted voice artists are being edged out, to the detriment of the message.

The whole thing suggests to me that Bankwest can’t be trusted to provide in-person service.

I agree and IMO Bankwest have shot themselves in the foot with this ad.

Love it or hate it, AI is the future .

Campaign Brief et al have given high praise to the ad and if it had been for a brand new innovative online bank with new ideas and great rates, it may have worked.

Bankwest is none of that.

Their last focus was on "Bank Less"

After no longer offering business banking and closing ALL their branches in WA last year, an exodus of customers did take their advice and "banked less" with Bankwest and "banked more" with other banks.

Now it's "Just enough Bank" and IMO the ad should have been very personal, quite the opposite to this new ad, to entice old customers back and gain new ones.

It’s been researched since the 1950s, with long periods of fallow nothingness … then a resurgence… then more stumbling blocks … and then about ten-twenty years ago things started kicking off. It was in 2022 that AI seriously came into its own.

That’s the iteration of what is generally considered the big boom and genuine birth of publicly utilised AI. That’s when all the theoretical considerations of ethics re AI became practical… and humankind has yet to really address this / solve this.

I totally understand where you are coming from.

BUT.

' Humankind ' has actually progressed towards this for decades.

It's here - it is used for many good reasons - ie

With all ' the theoretical considerations of ethics ' - whose??

AI is here to stay - like it or not.

One does not have to like it - appreciate it in - Art - Music - etc - most can determine the difference.

Humankind has actually had the nous to make AI a thing - what do they have to ' solve '.

Technology has overtaken - jobs - etc - we are now in the future of all of our childhoods.

If you use Chrome to ask a question e.g. does cash mean money, you get an AI response. Chrome confirms it is an AI response. It is fast and helpful. But sometimes the answer is wrong because it has interpreted the content of the question, but not the context. This largely happens when the question is a bit abstract and may be interpreted in different ways. However, AI is limited in it's ability to do that and some of the replies can be quite humorous and naive, like a child.

Ethical considerations include use of copyright material and works with IP being used without permission or reimbursement, as training for AI. This is insult to injury - IP being abused in order to further the scientist’s, the artist’s, the performer’s, etc. future ability to produce, be given grants, be offered opportunities. The instrument of our limited opportunities is our own intelligence.

Also… AI has inherent biases based on the very proliferation of material presented in purely artificial constructs. These biases are difficult to suspect, let alone prove.

That’s just the tip of the Titanic-killer.

Understood - but - AI is simply not the only response one gets.

Not sure there is anything ' unethical ' in a voice-over in a TV ad.

Yes exactly. But who do you believe when the information in a dictionary is exactly the opposite to the AI information? Do we choose the AI advice, or the advice provided by e.g. Oxford, Collins or Cambridge dictionaries?

Dictionaries - all the way.

AI is only as good as the info programmed into it - ie algorithm.

I actually hate it but do understand it can be of help in - many - many areas.

Just not those that involve emotion.

It worries me when people do take AI’s word for it… and so many people who aren’t necessarily tech-savvy are fooled by deepfake AI-generated videos that look as though a famous and trusted person is endorsing something.

Another example of AI (but not in plain sight) - bank data breaches with mid-level hackers (not tech geniuses themselves) using AI to generate malicious code instead of creating/designing it themselves. Entry level hackers suddenly don’t need to be very clever because AI is proliferating in the scammer and hacker worlds.

How often have you replied to posts here - where there has been - to some - an obvious scam - to those who don't ' know ' - have given details etc etc

How often have you commented on don't ' go there '.

Some are going to be scammed - some are going to be hacked - simply because - well - just hit on cheap le creuset for example.

This is how they make their money - this is how they operate - and have done for years.

It is up to the idividual to safeguard themselves.

AI is here - be aware.
