Postage ripoff??

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I posted regarding a funny way of doing combined postage.

The seller (in Canada) had combined postage as follows -

$9.99 first item, $4.99 each additional item. (I bought 3)

OK, no problem . But when I went to pay he said "You pay the full postage (9.99 each) and I will then reimburse you when you recieve the items."

So I emailed when the items arrived. This is his response.

"Also, for insurance purposes I'll need pictures of the package, this way we can pin point all the details of the shipment."

HUH!!! Insurance!!! Need pictures for postage reimbursement?? Pinpoint the details of the shipment??

Has anyone ever heard of this type of process before re postage? Just seems a very odd way to do business.

maybe the insurance he writes of is insurance against an Item Not Received claim. If you send him pictures you can hardly claim it is not received. Maybe, it might also show that the item arrived undamaged to 'insure' him against an Item Not As Described claim as it will look exactly as it did in the listing.

I'd be sending the pictures. If he doesn't refund as promised I'd be leaving appropriate feedback.

I actually can't find fault with a seller doing this, they probably had a lot of bogus claims so want to make sure it's all above board..

Send the pictures, sure. Just don't lose track of the window needed to make a claim for the agreed-to refund of the partial postage costs. Any stipulations agreed upon should be held to, no matter what the seller's reason is.

especially since they are posting from Canada. If the item takes many weeks to arrive they may have been burned on international posting before.

IMO that would make their actions understandable, but to me not acceptable.

They have advertised postage discounts but in practice seem to only want to honour them after making a buyer jump through several hoops - that's compounded by the fact that they apparently don't inform anyone about these hoops until after purchase. Not only that, they are asking the buyer to trust their word since it's virtually impossible to get a partial refund of postage costs once the invoice is paid, yet their actions would suggest that they don't trust buyers in general.

A strange way to do business, indeed.

How much would anybody like to bet that if the photos are sent there will be a request for the buyer to leave feedback to complete the requirements for a postage refund?

Just leave them a NEGATIVE now-absolutely pathetic seller & have no idea why you even paid in 1st place,I wouldn't have until they adjusted the postage discount.

My thought exactly, I would have made 3 seperate payments and if I received one parcel would have opened disputes for the other 2!

Item not received.

The seller can only provide proof of postage for ONE delivery. Therefore the other 2 deliveries "must have not been sent" 😉

I would hate to think that any forum poster of any standing would suggest through their posts that it would be acceptable to make a false or fraudulent claim, regardless of whether a seller acts inappropriately or not.

If I received one parcel I would not open it, I would give it a few more days for the other two to arrive and then make the claim.

Once I had my refund I would of course open the first parcel, tell the seller I had now found the other two items and would be happy to pay the item price for them. I would not however be paying for two postage services that had been paid for but not provided.

PJ, thanks for the clarification. I haven't read any post that said you would rip anyone off or make a fraudulent claim. So the answer to your question is: nobody.

I was awaiting your reply to my question "exactly what dispute would you have opened for the other two?" before making comments specific to your post. It does raise one further question though - How would you decide which two items to make a claim on?

Open one, if they reply with proof of posting then open claims for the other 2.

If they have no proof of posting so I win then open a dispute for one of the others.

It's always a little scary to see advice about opening fraudulent claims - but you get used to seeing it in these forums after a while.

... but to get back on track... you were very brave to accept the seller's terms, looking! I agree with the advice given earlier - to just send the pictures and wait for the refund.

Whilst understandable, as digital*ghost has said, it is not an ideal way to do business. The seller should probably reconsider posting overseas if they are so nervous. Yep, a very odd what of doing business 😮
