Have used the Paypal pay in 4 twice, tried to use it today but was it was rejected, this is ridiculous I rang Paypal and they couldn't help and gave me no explanation.

Maybe try emailing if there was no help on the phone?

At least you will have proof/something in writing then if you need it

Maybe it was simply a loose Gremlin ?

Could there be a limit? Having you been making the required repayments from previous purchases on time?

Do you always pay your general debts in a timely manner, including utilities, rent etc?

Paypal does do a credit check, so their decision to lend to you, as well as how much they might lend may be based on that criteria. They possibly want to see a solid history of repayment before raising any limits.

From Paypal T&C's:

PayPal reserves the right to grant or refuse the Pay in 4 Plan at its sole discretion and for any reason, including on the basis of our assessment of your credit worthiness.

On a side note, because Paypal does a credit check, this gets noted in your credit report and may impact your credit score down the line when you need to get a mortgage or purchase a big ticket item.

That would be the most logical reason, but Michelle said that PayPal had no idea... although it is not surprising that sometimes those who work for a company have no idea and cannot help, so maybe Michelle can look at her two past transactions in detail (based on the T&Cs) and see if there was any delay or anything that might have caused this new transaction to fail.

Yup, she might have just gotten an employee that is a bit clueless, but she should also look into her own credit report.

Michelle - you can get a free copy of your credit report once a year from most of the major credit reporting agencies. See if there are any flags on there that might be limiting for you. Have a look at Experian, Equifax or Illion.

Alternatively, it could just be an Ebay glitch. Plenty of them going around at the moment. Try another browser.

I give up, I just did a live chat with Paypal and got no explanation at all. when I rang Paypal he said you'll have to wait weeks before you can use it again, I'm furious and about to explode. I dont need this trouble so close to Xmas, Happy Xmas everybody.

If not, perhaps go to the shops and pay with a debit card. Local businesses will be happy for your custom.

How did you buy on Ebay before signing up to Paypal 4?

Also, why leave it to the last minute? Literally 5 days before Xmas.Even if you had bought the item, no guarantee of delivery this week.

I am slightly confused, do Paypal do a credit check everytime you use pay in 4, or is it just an ongoing type of credit where they don't check, I have rung them a few times but still no clear answer, any help would be appreciated.👍

Only Paypal would know the answer to that question, and if they don't want to tell you there's nothing you can do about it.

As asked before, don't you have a credit card or debit card you can use instead ?

If you're using the service on an ongoing basis, they probably carry out regular credit checks. They're protecting their interests, not yours. If you use the service today, but then tomorrow something negative appears on your credit rating because you didn't pay your car loan in a timely manner, then Paypal will reevaluate you.

If they decide you're too much of a risk, they will withdraw the service or limit you. It can happen at a moments notice and is probably an automated system.

You mean you don't use a credit card specifically for Ebay purchases, or in general?

The money on Paypal has to come from somewhere? How do you fund your Paypal account?

Ebay will be removing Paypal for buyers at some point - just so you know for the future.

There's been talk that that will happen next year or the year after Jelly.

The ONLY options then will be, G Pay, Visa, Mastercard or AmEx - ALL credit cards, so Michelle if you have a poor credit rating you need to do something about it or you won't be buying on eBay for much longer.

Since you enquired I have a reasonable credit rating. Just super strange why my Paypal pay in 4 account has been stopped, I've used it twice before with no problem but now its a no goer.

Maybe you've reached a limit. Maybe you've been remiss in your payments.

Maybe, as I always advocate, don't buy non-essentials (which is anything on eBay, especially prohibited imports) if you can't pay in full up front.

Michelle, I don't think anyone here can help you with why. Maybe if you are new to using it, they might have monthly limits on what you can use?

Given that PayPal will be gone next year, or the year after, get onto your bank and get a Visa debit card. It's different to a credit card in that you don't pay fees or interest. You load money onto the card to use for purchases. If you don't have the money on it, you can't use it.

If you see something you really like for $100, add $25 each week for 4 weeks, then hit the buy button. If you are a regular buyer, maybe you can have a direct transfer from your regular bank account every week or fortnight, then when you want to buy, the money is there ready to go. Even 5 or 10 bucks a week soon adds up.

A friend of mine is on the dole (due to Covid, they are starting a new job mid January) and they transfer $20 a fortnight. It's an automatic thing they set up. The next morning after their dole payment, their $20 gets transferred to their debit card. It was surprising how much it added up this year, and they were able to do all their Christmas shopping, plus buy some really nice food to have. Ordinarily, they would have had to skimp.

It's certainly worth considering if you are a regular buyer using PayPal (I am also not happy that PayPal will be ended, because that has always been my preferred payment). For now, try the PayPal forums and see if anyone there can help.
