And you cannot 'accidentally' commit to buy something

You can contact the seller with that story, but they are under zero obligation to agree to cancel

You can always pay for what you committed to buy and sell it yourself when it arrives

You bought it, you pay for it. Ebay isn't a game. As mentioned, you can't accidentally buy something. Unless it was your goldfish that accidentally bought it. They have a bad habit of doing that.

You can always just not pay for it and get an unpaid strike on your account. Strikes aren't a good thing, but it might be your best option. If you have a habit of accidentally buying and then not paying, you'll find yourself blocked from accidentally buying from a lot of sellers. That is a good thing. For the sellers.

Yes, apparently ok to waste others seller's time and money and possibly cost them a genuine sale

Happy to give a green tick to a fake buyer

No other sellers are going to have a clue who they are talking about

Then fake buys themselves

At least seller here have a heads up and can block accordingly

What bad advice to give to this buyer, what about the poor seller, No one should be suggesting you just don't pay, I'm sure you wont like it being done to yourself as a seller.

I don't like it done to me. Thankfully, it's extremely rare (3-4 in 15 years). If a numpty buyer wants to play games about an "accidental" purchase, let them not pay and let them pay with a well deserved strike on their account. My last unpaid, I was able to cancel as unpaid after 2 days, so it's not the end of the world for the seller. I would much rather punish the buyer for being a d1ck.

As long as sellers know they can cancel as unpaid, it's the numpty buyer that pays the price. As for the OP, as it was clearly their neighbour's brother in laws sisters mother in laws step fathers new wifes dog that made the accidental purchase, I'm happy for them not to pay and get a well deserved strike.

If they hadn't hit the buy button, they wouldn't be getting a message to check out and pay. You should know that. Sheesh!

You don't get the "pay now" message if item is added to cart only if you "buy now"(which is a commitment )or accept an offer. I have on occasion had items sitting in the cart for days and was not nagged to pay

My husband has had items in the cart for months while he tries to decide which one he wants to buy. Like you, he's never had a demand to pay because he's committed to buy an item that is just sitting in his cart. Only after he's selected to buy the item does the prompt appear to pay (he always pays immediately).

I'm wondering if they put the thing in the shopping cart but looked at the ad again later and pushed the buy it now tab or whatever, because ebay doesn't usually give a message that you have committed to buy, go to checkout and pay for items that are just in the cart.

Blackmih's post is confusing in that aspect. If an item is just in his cart, he needs to remove it.

Or he could just mean he committed to buy but now doesn't want it and wants the sale cancelled and no reminder of it showing. That's how I am interpreting it.

If he has somehow committed to buy & doesn't want it, then I agree with sons n daughters that the best solution is for Blackmih to just not pay. He isn't going to anyway, we can tell that from his post. I don't think it is bad advice to give a buyer, it is the most straight forward way out of a mess like this. The seller can very easily claim an unpaid item and give the buyer a strike.

It's not that I like to see sellers messed around, just that I think realistically, it's the safest bet for sellers.
