Can anyone explain to me why ebay charge $300 import duty on a $1000 dollar item? Brian Canberra.

I can't help thinking this is a scam. They pay the gov the required tax (10%) but keep the rest for themselves. And there's nothing I can do about it. When I inquire they send me round in a circle.

It sounds like GST is being collected by the shipping company rather than ebay. Ebay only charges GST 10% with no additional charges.

Shipping companies that are required to collect GST for LVI, charge the 10% GST, plus they are entitled to charge any amount they like, for doing so, with the additional charges normally being listed as duties.

I'm talkng about the "import Duty" collected by ebay. It is about 30% of the purchase price.

As far as I can see it's being collected by ebay. Shipping is separate.

No, it's being sent via the Global Shipping Program, so the import charges go to them, not eBay.

Edit. And they send the import taxes to the Australian Government.

If it is being shipped via GSP, GSP is responsible for collecting and remitting the GST, on top of the GST they can also set any fee they like for collecting GST, and now for the kicker, you are then required to GST on the collection fee. Thanks Gerry

I see. Well, I think people should be aware that they are charging a lot more than they have to give to the Aussie gov (10% on items more than $1000). What exactly have they done to earn that extra amount?

Customs Import Duty cost was shown in the listing before you bought.

You chose to buy anyway.
