Not really a query, just some light relief.

I received a seller offer yesterday for something in my watch list.

At first I was excited, but on closer inspection I thought, hang on, wait a minute!

I didn't even realise sellers could send special offers higher than the asking price. And yes, it is $6 on the site and it was $6 when i saved it to watch list a couple of days back.

If the seller has automatic offers enabled, each listing has its own offer amount attached. For example, if the item is listed for $20 and the seller has the offer amount set to 10%, the send offer amount field will show $18.

If the seller revises that listing to $15, but doesn't also revise the send offer amount field, the automatic offers for the item will still be set at $18.

A lot of sellers have absolutely no idea they have the automatic offers turned on, let alone how to edit the preset amount. I'm really not surprised that it's happening.

Thanks, lezned.

It is just that it comes across as weird (as a buyer) to be sent offers like this and I have never had it happen before. Then suddenly my last two have been like it.

Sort of disappointing as I see the notice about an offer and look forward to seeing it. I often buy if I get an offer!

I am a bit surprised the ebay system cannot adjust offers based on the revised price.

Having said that, I did message the last seller to say I was confused and to ask if they sent the offer or was it ebay's doing (I showed them the screenshot) and they confirmed it was sent by ebay, not them. I never saw it at a dearer price but then again, I only saved it to my watch list a day or so before the offer.

I totally understand. The price could have been revised last year... or the year before that... or any time really. Adding the item to your watch list is what actually triggered the automatic offer to be sent, and the system will use the seller's preset amount.

If the seller didn't revise the automatic offer amount when they revised the item price (whenever that may have been), it results in the exact scenario you have described.

Just so you can visualise what I'm saying, I've just activated automatic offers on one of my items... selling price $5.95.... auto offers amount 10%. See the screenshots below. Once added to the listing, that auto offer amount will remain the same until it is edited. So in this case, if I drop the price to $3.95, the auto offers will still go out at $5.36

It's stupid, I know, but that's just how the system works.

Oh, and I forgot to add the generic message which accompanies the automatic offers is something along the lines of, "Here's your chance to get this item at a great price!".

This message can be edited, but again, many, many, many sellers don't even know they have enabled automatic offers - let alone how to edit/change any part of the process.
