Silly bids

I have noticed on some items I have been watching, that people are going in very early and making bids,sometimes leading to ridiculous high pirces, rather than waiting till later to bid. I have been put off bidding as I have no intention of paying huge prices on items I have previously bought for a good,though reasonable price. I thought by now buyers would know that you don't bid till the item is nearer it's listing end.

Many buyers also realize no point in nibble bids, they simply bid the amount they are prepared to pay and then they don't need to be on the computer. If they don't win, onto the next and so forth.

I like to bid early for two reasons,

Sometimes others won't bid if they see that someone is already interested in an item, or I just want to place my offer and don't want to bother coming back to watch and bid again later. I have my top price and if I get it for less it is just a bonus. Bidding early doesn't mean that you will have to pay your top amount.

There is no right way to bid and it generally doesn't matter if you bid early or late. All bidders do what suits them.

I will often bid early on items from newish sellers as I often find that if they don't reach a reasonable price before reaching the 24 hour mark the auction is removed, as the seller gets nervous that they won't get the price they were hoping for (in the case of low start price auctions). They don't trust/understand that they will probably get bid up hugely in the last few minutes.

I only place early minimum bid if there is a BIN price, by bidding I prevent somebody snatching it 🙂

rosie as a seller I love early bidders as then they do have a bidding war and I get a higher price for my items 🙂

Me too, as a seller, I love early bidders! It's so depressing having an auction and it runs for days without any bids.

As a buyer, I bid early when I see the item, I might forget later.

I thought by now buyers would know that you don't bid till the item is nearer it's listing end.

There is no reason why buyers shouldn't bid early if they want to, they might enjoy the chase!

Hi Rosie, I have to agree with you. I've been a buyer on Ebay for many years and have found that bidding days before an auction item ends is usually a sure way to be paying top dollar for what you want irrespective of whether or not the item is worth the amount it ends up at. Also bidding too early only encourages shill bidding by the seller's friends and/or family to artificially up the price. That's just my opinion. Everyone is different. You find what works best for you in the end. All the best.

It is the highest bid that wins, if two people bid the same amount at the same time near the end the one with the earliest bid wins so that would be the one who bid early.

I find the thread title "silly bids" extremely offensive, there is nothing silly about my bids and I bid early to wipe out the BIN option and that to me is very sensible.

I agree with you Rosie....
Some of the bidding of items on here is absolutely ridiculous! And when one buyer really wants an item, but not pay too much, then i have noticed that same bidding id come up time and time again, bumping up the price to *their* limit (say $400) then losing out at the last minute...where as, if that buyer had sat on it until the last 5mins, then whacked on their 4400 bid, they might have got the item at half that price!

It really irks me to see an auction with 8 days to go and already 15 bids, but only sitting on $2 or $3 dollars because some nit-wit has *increased* their highest bid 10 times already!!

some people are all braun but no brains!

Some buyers would bid early to stake their claim and keep bidding to put the watchers off from bidding. It can be a tactic.

I only bid late, if I don't forget! Or I watch items and buy it now when I am ready to purchase it
