A parcel over 500grams cost more to send within 50 kilometres than a parcel under 500 grams to anywhere in Australia .

A parcel that weighs 510 grams cost close to $9 to send locally while a parcel that weighs 499 grams cost about $6.60 or less to send anywhere in Australia for example Darwin to Hobart .

Australia Post does send a lot by air , it is impossible to send parcels by trucks to islands within Australia and to many outback areas in Australia

Even if they were sent by truck from Sydney to Darwin , the cost would be more than from Sydney to North Sydney .

Australia Post also sends many sea paid parcels overseas by air when they have containers available

Regarding my postage cost , If I want to charge my buyers the same cost regardless of where they live , that is my business decision in a free enterprise system also price control is illegal in Australia

Just venting..........Many examples I can think of. Here's just 1.....Recently bought 2 tee shirts. 1 from a Sydney seller the other from an American seller. Postage was dearer for Aust. Post satchel than USPS. How can it be possible knowing that the USPS item is handled by Aust. Post when it hits our shores????? Can't get my head around it!!!!! Suffice to say we are being shafted!!!

It isn't exactly cheap and I think AP could most definitely do with an eBay satchel between the 500g and 3kg ones, but in the grand scheme of things to post something to anywhere in Oz - NT, Tas, WA from anywhere in Oz for $6.20 and $10.55 and $13.75 depending on weight and size, it isn't that bad. Once you start having to cube out then it is expensive, but I use couriers for those items.

which is partly why US post is broke, cant afford any more staff, cant afford to pay entitlements to staff they'd like to let go, cant afford to maintain their vehicles and are in dire straits..

while AustPost is still turning a profit and giving good service, with all staff paid up, superannuations paid up, and hiring new staff all the time.

I do wish aus post would rethink the under 250grams but wider than 20mm price, $5.00 wasn't too bad but it's hard to justify $6.60 for a tiny item that is just too wide to safely post without a bit of packing.

another price rise - my PO said that too.

Actually, I don't think it is all that dear - when you think of the size of Australia and how marvellous it is that if you post an express parcel today, in most cases it is there tomorrow. That's a lot of miles!

I do miss the smaller postage as you say. What I think is expensive is the postage from Australia to overseas - especially since the 750g rate has gone. Postage at $28.90 for a large book is bad, bad, bad.

If you think AP prices are high try posting anything weighing over 2kg overseas from the UK!

At least here you can send things up to 20kg using the postal service, in the UK you have to use an expensive courier service for anything over 2kg.

AP has to cover lot of ground to deliver mail. And here in Australia we pay people enough to live on. I watched last night 4corners, which was about working homeless in the USA. Previously "middle class" people who lost their well paid jobs, lost their houses and everything; now working for $8 an hour and living either in 1 room in a motel with 6 kids, or sleeping in cars, kids and all. It just depends on what society we want to live in.

I use eparcel as I prefer to send items with tracking and signature. upto 49g it cost $7.49. I have received harsh feedback because I charge $7.50. Customers perception of the cost needs to change as well.

Plus just realised that if you sell multiply items and received negative feedback. You get a point for each listing sold in that transaction. Hence a customer buys 5 items and decides to give you negative feedback then you receive 5 points. But when you received poitive feedback you only get 1 from a customer even if they buy multiply items or purchase more than once within 7 days. Does anyone else think this is wrong of ebay?

Its not the cost of postage that should be the issue, its customers perception. I wish more people had seen the report and would realise that we are very lucky here. I would rather people have jobs than pay cheaper post.

Australia post is ludicrously expensive

Yes I have to agree, I recently went to post an item that packed in a box weighed about 3 kg but at the PO the cubed weight was close to 23 kg and the PO refused to accept it.

I had to take it home and repack with bits and pieces poking out everywhere and this time the cubed weight was between 18 and 19 kgs so they would accept it and it cost $25 to post to the ACT from NSW.

However the actual weight remained constant at about 3 kgs.

The largest cardboard packaging box from AP has printed on it "the cubed weigth of this box is 8 kg".

If I were to buy that box and put my name and address on it and post it off totally empty it would weight 8 kg according to AP. How is this possible?
