I recently purchased 2 items from the same seller. When the items appeared in my purchase list, they were shown as separate. I messaged the seller (as I always do when I purchase multiple items from the same seller) and asked that the two items be combined on the one invoice (both items were free of postage costs) so that I would only have to make one Paypal transaction.

The seller replied that they were unable to do this (no explanation given). I messaged back, getting a little more insistent that it could be done, and they replied with the suggestion that I deal with them outside of eBay.

Finding this suggestion to be totally unethical, I asked them to cancel the sale. I have not paid for the items.

Am I within my rights to do this??

There would be the potential to incur bank charges if there are excessive transactions on the account I use for my Paypal transactions. I was seeking to avoid those bank charges.

Other sellers from whom I have purchased multiple items have not had a problem with combining items on the one invoice and accepting a single payment. I don't know what this bloke's problem was.

Just wondering if you attempted to go through checkout at all?

If you buy more than one item from a seller, unless they have selected the option to not allow buyers to combine multiple purchases, they are automatically combined at checkout and you can pay for them together. There are very few sellers that don't allow purchases to be automatically combined in this way, and it also means the only time you really need to wait for an invoice is if the seller needs to adjust postage costs, which isn't possible if all items are free post, or discounts are automatically calculated at the checkout.

That being said, the only time a seller can't generate a manual invoice for more than one item is when they're listed in different currencies. Depending on the specifics of the seller's suggestion re: dealing outside eBay, it may or may not be against policy as you've already purchased via eBay so they theoretically will have their fees regardless of how you pay afterwards, although as it so far seems the suggestion wasn't necessary for any reason, the seller's response does sound odd and I can understand why it raised a red flag or two.

Yes, I did attempt checkout, but only one item showed, so that's when I asked for a combined invoice for the second time.

Mind you, the seller obviously has English as their second language, as can be judged from this message, received after I requested the invoice be combined. I have removed the identifying components:

Hi there

Glad to hear from you!

For your situation, how about we dealing outside the eBay? You can send money 165.38 for xxxx to our paypal: xxxxxxxxxx. Then after that, inform us here of your shipping address so that we can ship them out together asap.

For the 2 orders which is awaiting payment, we would cancel for you directly. How do you think? Any confusion? Pls do not hesitate to tell us here and we are more than honored to assist you.

Both items were listed in $AU, and the location given was Sydney, NSW. I will cancel the sale but I will also inform eBay of the seller's suggestion to deal with them away from eBay.

If it weren't for the suggestion to cancel the eBay orders, they wouldn't actually be breaching any policies by suggesting a direct payment (albeit for unfathomable reasons).

I don't really have anything more or constructive to add, though, as that is a relativey clear request to deal off eBay and report / move on is probably the best way to deal with it.

The suggestion to deal outside of Ebay not a good enough reason?? Or the fact that I wanted to save myself some bank fees by having two invoices combined??? Combining invoices has NEVER been a problem for other sellers. Some do it automatically. The sales have been cancelled, end of story.

I was happy to have the seller "revise" the invoice, but, apparently, they didn't know how to do that (why, I don't know). I would have been happy to have had them instructed on how to "revise" the invoice (by Ebay, not me), but they didn't know how to do that either.

When they suggested a deal outside of Ebay, I asked to cancel the sale.

For whatever reason the seller did not want to combine invoices, so where does it say that sellers have to combine invoices so that the buyer can save on their own bank fees?

The offer to deal outside ebay only came after you contacted the seller a second time and it would appear you were more insistant to have the invoices combined.

So why are you reporting the seller? Because they wouldn't combine the invoice the first time you asked or because they wouldn't combine the invoice the second time you asked or because after this they offered to sell outside ebay?

Your bank fees are not the sellers problem.

The seller, quite unethically as all posters on this topic have stated, asked to complete a transaction outside Ebay. If they had not done this, and had agreed to cancel the sale, that would have been that. I would have been happy with that outcome. But, they decided to try to deal outside of Ebay ..........

so you're going to report the seller because they were trying to help you, is that right?

Fair enough, I suppose. They did break the rules in the process of trying to do something nice for you, but that doesn't change the fact that they did break the rules I guess.

All because you were trying to save a few cents in bank fees.

Just because combining invoices has never been a problem for other sellers does not give you the right to assume that it won't be for this seller.

If you asked the seller before you bid/purchased if he would combine postage and he agreed (and you can prove this), or he has words to that effect in his listing, then this does mean that he is obligated to combine the invoices.

However if the combined post was not a condition of the contract/term of the contract at the time the items were purchased, you now have 2 separate legally binding contracts which you are obliged to pay for.

The seller is not obligated to cancel the sale.

However, I notice that the seller has been kind enough to release you from your contractual obligations, so you no longer have to pay.

Lucky you!

You are within your rights to report the seller to eBay for offering to trade off eBay, When you do so, I am sure that he will never try and go out of his way to help another customer again. You have done a great service to this entire community by alerting eBay to the nefarious activities of this seller, who, if he didn't know how to combine an invoice, probably didn't even realize he was breaking any rules. Still, he does need to be taught the rules, I guess.

I do not condone the seller's intent to (possibly unknowingly) break the rules, and if he was unaware that he was doing so, neither do I excuse him for his ignorance of the rules.

Thank you for helping to keep eBay a safe place to trade.

Welcome to my special list.
