not sure what they are called but im chasing ant cups. typed in "ant cups" but nothing shows for me.they use to be around years ago where one could place some oil into this cup thing and put them under cupboards etc to stop ants getting to food.am wanting them to keep ants out of bee hives.if anyone know the proper name so i can look for listings here maybe..

Where do you put the cups? Do you stand the legs of the hive in the cups to stop the ants crawling up the legs? Are the cups plastic or metal?

What about those small pet bowls that have a moat rim around the edge. Search "ant free bowl"

I looked up ant traps and couldn't see anything cup-like, except for a few home made traps and some antique ones that looked a bit like saucers (legs of the table were placed in the centre, then liquid would be poured into the "moat" - used specifically to stop ants climbing up to the table where food was being kept, and seemed to just be called ant traps - http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Antiques-Collectibles-Ant-traps-can-be-2262189.php )

If you're after something like that, it looks like you'll either have to improvise (the bowls suggested by sportandplay will probably do the job), or get a potter to custom make something (unless I'm not looking for the right thing).

The next closest thing I turned up was something called Terro Outdoor liquid ant bait stations, but none available in Oz on eBay.

Good link 🙂 Someone in that thread referred to ant guards - there are some on eBay and they look very cup-like. 😄

I've always found ants to go nuts for BBQ chicken. If I have even the smallest crumb of one, I also have a swarm of ants, so you could try that as a lure / diversionary tactic.

mmm where do i start...looks something like this pic..more like the second pic which has a higher middle,,the ones i remember were metal and mum dad had food cupboads on them.

you would place a little veg oil into them and sit the cupboard legs in the middle of these ant thingys .if you can imagine a saucer and an upside down tin in the middle and the saucer with a little veg oil.im confusing myself.

bee hives dont have legs..just a normal looking timber box which has a flat bottom.id like to place 4 of these things under each corner,add some veg oil and yay,no more ants distressing my bees

sportandplay just gave me an idea.i could use a flower pot saucer with an upside down tuna tin then place some oil in the saucer mmmm...better go check for tuna tins on ebay

i use to use boric acid around each hive and it kept ants away very well,then i thought it might hurt the bees so i no longer use it around the hives.thats why i now sell the boric,good stuff around the home,sheds etc.

Don't even think about using those flat plastic animal food bowls with the fairly narrow moat...they are cheap enough but the ants just laugh at them and continue on their merry way into the food. The smallest piece of grass or other matter floating in the moat is used as a bridge by the little b*ggers.
