In fact I'd left very positive feedback for the seller before I'd even opened the item.

I bought a wild yam cream in a pump, and after three pumps found I could no longer use it because I found the fragrance too strong and overpowering. I contacted the seller to ask for exchange or refund but I've been refused because I opened it. How could I possibly know the scent was too strong without opening it? Do I have any recourse on this type of personal item?

I don't know for sure but I would think not. I don't think you can go to a store buy some perfume or handwash etc use it a few times and then say "I don't like it anymore, I want a refund", but I could be wrong.

Of course you don't have any recourse, the item was exactly as described just unsuitable for you personally. How could you expect the seller to do anything once the item has been opened, they cannot resell it. Give it to a friend or relative.

Even if they were daft enough to offer you a refud by the time you paid for fully trackable return post you wouldn't get an awful lot back.

I hope you don't think the fact that it is too strong for you will cause you to leave them anything other than pos feedback, or no feedback at all. If you do then you will probably be on a lot of sellers special lists!

You have opened it and tried it, and it is not to your liking.

if the product was otherwise in perfect new condition, no, you have no recourse.

if you were in a shop, there would have been a tester available (usually), that you could have tried before purchase.

a shop would not refund on used toiletries either. It would not be hygienic, and against eBay policy to attempt a resale; you might want to give it away.

unless you know the brand, I think you should get items of this nature from a shop next time 🙂

please, as pj says, leave appropriate feedback for the seller based on their performance...it is not their fault you did not like the fragrance.

That was nice of you 🙂

I would have waited until afterwards, in case the product was spoiled...that can be an issue with creams and lotions too. On eBay or a store. Things can melt in the heat...or be old stock.

I buy toiletries from eBay, but only stuff I know or that is for a gift. It can be difficult judging a scent if you do not know the product.

What is too strong for you might be just right for me, and scents will be different on different people too.

As the others have said, all that is wrong is that you don't like the product and that is a personal thing.

If you open a pack of breakfast cereal and hate the taste, would you go back to coles and ask for an exchange based on the fact you don't like it?

It reminds me a bit of clothes or shoes buying here on ebay. Sometimes a thing can be exactly as described and still not fit properly or not look all that nice on. That has happened to me in the past and I have just given the things away. There are now some things (such as shoes, unless I knew the exact brand/style) that i would never buy on ebay in a fit.

For you, toiletries might be like that.
