One of the reasons I will not offer free post is that Ebay's postage calculator by Ebay's own admission, is intended to give an APPROXIMATE postage cost. It does not allow for insurance, purchase of packing materials, cubing (fragile items require larger boxes) etc. To insure and use Signature on delivery is my only protection against 'shonky' buyers. I often check the buyers feedback, given and received, and find numerous complaints about postage costs because they simply do not understand that the postal sticker does not always reflect the full postage price.

Before leaving feedback, complaining , ask the Seller WHY?.

My quarterly figures show that my postage charges barely cover the actual costs, let alone the cost of delivery to the post office, the costs of packaging etc.

I once queried a US seller re the postage cost and he sent me a note that it had to include his "time and gas to get to the PO, time in the wait line, stress of getting everything done which was so great that he had to go to the bar across the road and havea whisky to recover before he could drive home" His sense of humour won the day and I didn't ask for a refund!

I won an auction for a 1992 Northern territory $10 unc silver coin and it said free postage and also won four other items, one of which I clicked on to pay now and all five items came up together in paypal so I just paid the lot. Then when I went back to look at the $10 coin it says postage is $7.70 and must be registered if paying by paypal. Now I don't have a problem paying the postage but am wondering why he can say free postage and it came up in paypal as free postage when it's not free postage.Very confusing(well at least to me it is)

Yes I did but not untill after I paid for the item, but it says Postage to an Australian address is $7.70 and then further down it says If paying with paypal I must take out registered postage a/c ebay's charge back policy. To me this sounds like I have to pay $7.70 postage no matter what and if paying with paypal it must be registered

I had a look at the seller's listings, and it would appear that all but 7 of their 1000+ listings have 'free postage' - I couldn't spot any in the first couple of pages with P&H, but if I clicked to show only listings with free post, the number of listings returned was reduced by only 7.

Some of the descriptions say postage is free within Oz, some of them say it's $7.70, but that is not actually allowed (i.e. advertising with free postage but then charging it). They are also not allowed to impose extra charges for PayPal payments, no matter what the extra is for.

As lyndal says, if any of the other items you purchased from the same seller had a P&H quote, then presumably that's where it came from (if indeed extra was charged, I'm not 100% clear 😛 ). If you only purchased free post items, the seller would have had to send a revised invoice to add postage on after the auction(s) ended, which is not kocher, if you will.
