Gday Richo... how they hanging ??? must have been on ebay US Richo and the seller made the item available worldwide or at least to ebay au

I beleive that in ebay AU vehicle auctions if your bid exceeds the reserve then the auto proxy bid offers the reserve so the price goes green and the item is "on the market. Howver I don't think this occurs with th US style of general auction reserve ie you need another bidder.

A lot of Australian sellers do this. List on the .com site so they can simply put a reserve on an item that isn't allowed on the .au site. It is allowed by ebay but totally unethical.

I see no problem with reserves being placed on bids and I'm quite happy to bid on items when they show up with reserves, but I'll still only bid as high as I am willing to pay for the item and no higher.

A few years ago I watched a collectable item with a reserve price climb rather dizzying amounts until it (finally) met the reserve and was sold. If the seller had started at the reserve price it may not have got nearly as much interest. As it was, in the end it sold for in excess of 500 GBP. It was out of my league but I kept it on the watch list out of curiosity.

As a buyer I am not at all happy to know sellers can and do put a reserve on their auctions unbeknown to bidders. Yes, a form of shill bidding IMO. Should not be allowed. Reserves on a vehicle as happens now I have no problem with. Undisclosed reserves probably explain when on occasions when I've placed a bid on an item and there's been no other bidder showing up in bid history that my max bid straight away is outbid or way up. NOT right.

Angel from what I understood from Bsal's post there is no way for the bidders to know the seller has placed a reserve - there's nothing showing up as there being a reserve price on the listing at all. Sorry if I've got it wrong.

This is so, and it's allowed. It's in no way unethical. But it's not hidden, it's marked as a reserve met or reserve not met, as it is with motors listings on the .au site.

It's only bsal's opinion that it's unethical, and most will ignore that. Nothing unethical at all about it. Buyers can choose whether to bid or not, just as they do with private listings and other variances. Reserve auctions here were very unpopular as i said before, which is why eBay discontinued them. People didnt want to place bids and wait a week or 10 days to find out that the reserve was not met and in the meantime they had missed out on other similar items.
