Thank you! Yeah, I was pretty chuffed. We guesstimated around 3kgs, but not having any scales, and being fishos...well?

It was returned to the water shortly after the photo session, to swim away unharmed.

Anyway, it was caught in a Gold Coast lake last November, (I'm sworn to secrecy, on pain of death), on a live mullet, and as stated, on 3kg chinese braid - and was my 1st Jack.

Don't know what I'm going to do to top that!

BUYER BE AWARE OVER RATED STRENGTH RAITINGS ON BRAID LINES & FAKE FLUOROCARBON , DO THE TESTS

MOST OF THE CHEAPER BRAID FISHING LINE ON EBAY IS FALSELY ADVERTISED. BY OVER RATING THEIR LINE CAPACITY,

I VE BOUGHT & TESTED ALL THE BRAID THAT I HAVE PURCHEST & ALL THE BRAID MY 2 SONS HAVE BEEN BUYING.

SINCE LOOSING FISH DUE TO LINE FAILURE ON BOTH BRAIDED & FLUOROCARBON LINES.

THEY ARE OVER RATED BY OVER HALF WHAT THEY CLAIM TO BE.

EG, 100LB LINE IS SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT 100LBS OF WEIGHT!! SIMPLE ENOUGH, ISNT IT,

I VE TESTED NO LESS THAN 15 DIFFERENT BRAIDED LINES & 12 FLUOROCARBON LINES FOR STRENTH & THE RESULTS ARE SHOCKING ALL OF THEM, DONT COME ANYWHERE NEAR THE STRENTH ADVERTISED

100LB RATED LINE ONLY SUPPORTS BETWEEN 39 -46LBS

40LB RATED LINE ONLY SUPPORTS BETWEEN 17 -19LBS

30LB RATED LINE ONLY SUPPORTS BETWEEN 12-14LBS

& SO ON.. BOTH BIN BRAIDED & FLUOROCARBON LINES

PLEASE TEST YOUR NEXT PURCHASE, BY SIMPLY TRYING TO SUPPORT WEIGHTS EQUALL TO THE LINE RATING YOU BOUGHT,,

IF YOU GOT A 50LB BRAID OR FLUOROCARBON LINE, TIE IT TO A WEIGHT OF 50LB & TRY TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT.

IF RATING IS CORRECT IT SHOULD SUPPORT THE WEIGHT,

WHEN YOU DO THIS TEST, YOU WILL NOTICE THE LINE WILL BREAK & YOUR 50LB LINE WOULD BE LUCKY TO SUPPORT 22LBS. UNDER HALF THE STRENGHT ADVERTISED

THATS FRAUD, RIGHT THERE, THAT COULD BE CAUSING YOU TO LOSE YOUR CATCH!!

YOU SHOULD DEMAND A REFUND..

ALSO TEST YOUR FLUOROCARBON FOR STENGTH THE SAME WAY..

BUT ALSO DO THE BURN TEST. TO SEE IF IT IS ACTUALLY FLUOROCARBON. OR YOUR GETTING RIPPED OFF, & PAYING 5 TIMES TO MUCH FOR JUST A MONO LINE

PUT A FLAME TO THE END OF YOUR LINE, IF IT CATCHES A LIGHT OR BURNS VERY EASY, ITS PROBALLY NOT FLUOROCARBON, & JUST MONO.

FLUOROCARBON DOESNT IGNITE INTO FLAME, IT SORT OF MELTS INTO A BALL & GOES BLACKISH MUCH SLOWER THAN MONO.

SO BUYER BE AWARE.

IF YOUR PRODUCT FAILS THE WEIGHT TEST OR THE FIRE TEST.

DEMAND A REFUND, YOUR BEING RIPPED OFF. I HAVE BEEN AGAIN & AGAIN WITH BRAID V& FLUOROCARBON.

ONLY BY TESTING & DEMANDING REFUNDS FROM THESE SELLERS SELLING FAKE & OR MISREPRESENTED ITEMS.

CAN WE SEE THE END OF THESE SELLERS, SELLING THEIR SUBSTANDARD OR EVEN FRAUDULENT WHARES TO PEOPLE BUYING & SPENDING THEIR MONEY IN GOOD FAITH.

I LD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE ELSE DOING TESTS ON THESE PRODUCTS, ALSO ABOUT TESTED GOOD PRODUCT.

IF THERE IS ANY ON LINE

CHEERS

Ebay calculate that about 5% of members read the boards and of those I should imagine you would be lucky if you found 0.1% who had ever bought or intend buying fishing line then of course I imagine 90% of the 0.1% of the 5% would read a post where the member is typing in capitals which are not only hard to read but are considered shouting and rather rude.

Whilst I agree that some of the ebay braid is rubbish, some is also very good - breaking well above the quoted strength. I have some cheapo braid on reels that performs just as good as the well-known brands.

Don't forget also, that a knot can reduce the breaking strain by almost half - the only 100% knots are the bimini twist and the plaited double. Attaching a swivel, lure or hook, the best knots are the centauri and the snell - but even those are only around 70% strength.

Here's a good site for knots.

http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/forumdisplay.php/111-Animated-Fishing-Knots

As far as quality braids go, why buy on ebay if you want quality? You know as well as I, that most ebay items can be, let's say - less than top quality! Caveat Emptor, I say.

Here's another site with some really good strength tests of various braids.

http://www.paulusjustfishing.com/4linetesting.htm

As far as F/C goes, If you're buying chinese, you deserve what you get! Buy from a tackle shop. Or buy Berkley Vanish. Never had an issue with that one.

And please...no shouting! (Capitals).

If you are talking The $6 'powerpro" from china vs $69 from the tackle shop are you surprised? It is obviously fake. But it still works just expect to buy higher rating and expect thicker line for rating. I use this stuff at least twice a week and still going after 2-3 years, on at least 10 reels.

The thing to watch is aus resellers buying the chinese stuff then reslling it as genuine at $30 a time. whereas for $6 its worth it.

If you are fishing extreme conditions go the genuine, but for middle of the road its fine.

The same fakes are sold by online stores outside of Ebay. You can tell they are fakes as they all have the same product code regardless of whats on the spool.

Line rating is not tested by simply hanging a weight on it either.

In use weakening by abrasion wear is likely to be higher. Casting distance due to increased thickness is much reduced along with reel capacity.

It makes good backing line then use quality at the business end, rather than tick mono backing taking too much spool spcae

Hi, I just recently bought some Bullet Proof PE Braid line, supposedly rated at 130 lb, which breaks consistently below 40 pounds. In all fairness the company did offered to refund the money if I returned the braid. The problem with sending it back is I would loose the evidence that this Company is acting fraudulently.

You will NEVER get braid, or mono for that matter, to break at anywhere near the test strength in practical applications because of knot limitations. Some of the more common attachment knots are around 50-60% so you lose close enough to half of the test strength right off the bat.

Another consideration is IFGA compliance. Nothing would be worse (in fishing terms) to land a world record breaker on 80lb test that subsequently tests at 100lb when submitted to the IFGA. For that reason virtually every line manufacturer overstates test strength by somewhere in the order of 10-20% as a rule.

So using your 100lb line as an example it's like this -

Nominally 100lb, reduction to 85lb for IFGA compliance (yes I knoiw 100lb isn't an IFGA class but you get my drift).
~60% strength knot, fairly standard for non specialty knots.

Which leaves you with about 50% of the original test strength, and these are fairly generous numbers. So I'd suggest your test numbers are very close to the mark, certainly within an appectable margin for error anyway.

The Bullet Proof PE Braid line is breaking mid line and not on the knots. Seems to know what he is talking about but at the same time there is a table of lines that have massively overtested, something that in my experience just doesn't happen. Have been a member of a number of fishing clubs over the years and have never heard of a record catch being invalidated or shunted into the next highest class because it overtested, so who really knows lol.

The line manufacturers and the big fishing bodies (GFAA, IGFA etc) all test on an Instron machine which costs many thousands of dollars so unless a rec fisherman has access to one it's not really going to be an apples to apples comparison anyway.

130 popping at 40 mid-line is obviously a worry but there could be numerous logical reasons for it, one of which is obviously a faulty batch. Drag setting at 30% should render most manufacturing defects redundant anyway, although 130/40 is definitely sailing a bit close to the breeze! Obviously up to you how you wanted to proceed but I wouldn't automatically assume something underhanded is going on, maybe return the line minus 4 or 5 metres and submit that to the IGFA and see what they find?

If it breaks mid line then there are weak spots in the line, ie it is faulty, not a rating issue. The knot will always be weaker than line, as long as line is uniform without local imperfections.

That is leaving aside of course any in use abrasion on the line, which is a weakness of braid.

I don't think 3kg is too much of a stretch, and good on you for releasing him after taking your photo. I was going to ask if you used live bait or a popper but you already answered my question. If I was chasing big Jacks, I might be inclined towards trying Hinze Dam myself. 😉

Yep. Heard good reports from Hinze - trouble is, I fly up - so no boat. Everything has to be landbased.

Still, with Jacks like him, metre+ giant herring, hooked and dropped, dart and whiting in the surf, 50metres from where we stay, life's not too shabby!

Still at the missus to retire up there somewhere!

S'funny - the guy who introduced me to his secret honey hole, told me they'd only fire on live bait, but I went back 3-4 times after, and flogged the water to foam, with every popper, stickbait, minnow and soft plastic - to no avail. Not even a follow!

While the Gold Coast definitely has a lot going for it, if it's fishing you're interested in, you could do a lot worse than retiring anywhere between say Coffs Harbour and the Qld/NSW border area. That gives you virtually 400km of some of the best unspoiled beaches, estuaries, rivers & lakes from which to choose.

You should spend a few days touring up up the Pacific with your missus and stopping overnight at places like Brunswick Heads, Nambucca Heads, Macksville, Maclean, Urunga, and literally scores of other wonderful towns and villages which are much cheaper than the Gold Coast, and your biggest problem will be trying to choose where you want to live. 😉

You could spend the rest of your life there and never fish the same place twice. Talk about heaven!
