Hello how can I tell if an Email from Ebay is genuine?

I just have received an email from ebay which was downloaded into my mail program on my computer.

I logged into my account on ebay and checked wether this email exists there in “My Messages” as well. The message exists there too.

I am asking, because the message from ebay says, that I recently had contact to a seller. This sellers name is clearly mentioned. It is a seller I have problems with and Ebay is just helping me to look into this case.

This email also says that there are signs that a third person has used THE Ebay account in order to send unauthorized spam emails. Unfortunately it does not say whose Ebay account was used. The sellers or mine.

I would like to answer this email and get more information from then. But before I do so I want to be sure that this email is genuine.

This email has also several help links, but I have not clicked them.

Has it ever happened that fake emails have turned up in someones “My Messages” folder? Is it safe to click the “answer” tab of this email?

I have never, as far as I know, had a non genuine ebay message appear in my message inbox, if you are worried about it why not give ebay a call.

Simple - if it's in your eBay messages, it's from eBay. Not hard, nor worth the question.

If you have any doubts at all, answer for your ebay messages rather than from your personal email address.

If it is in both places it is highly unlikely to be spam.

But don't expect ebay to give you any information.....they are very good at dodging straight out questions that may be useful.

I sent the email to spoof@ebay and it came back that its a scam email. Then I rung up Ebay Overseas, they had a look into my account and say its a genuine message. I will also contact Ebay Australia and ask them too.

Yes thanks, I have answered this email now from my ebay account. It appears my "little friend" has contacted Ebay and claims that someone has hacked his email account and that it was not him who sent all this messages to me. and other customers...lol. Not bad idea to create an aliby i think.

Never rely on spoof@ebay or spoof@paypal to confirm if a message is genuine or not. More often than not they will confirm it is not genuine when it really is.

If a message is in both your ebay messages as well as your personal email it really is safe to assume that it is genuine.

If it does not ask for any personal information it is unlikely to be any sort of a scam.

Sometimes you can over think these things....if you are going to be checking everything in minute detail you need to ask if you really want to deal on line, whether it is ebay or any other venue.
