Adding extra charges

How can this guy http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/osherg continually add extra charges and then keep selling?

People have left negative feedback for him but he is essentially scamming $5.00 off every customer by adding charges after they have committted to buy but before the check out.

How is he scamming buyers?

All his listings state Freight so you have to ask for a postage quote.

He does have a postage table for smaller items but if you use that and pay with paypal you have to pay for registered/SOD and insurance....which is probably the $5 you are talking about.

Whether or not he is scamming, one look at his feedback would have me avoiding buying from him.

I suspect that eBays MBG and return policies will soon start biting. A lot of his red dots are complaining about having to pay return postage on faulty/incorrect/not as described goods. Maybe he's the sort of seller that these newish policies are aimed at. It's just a pity that the rest of us are caught up in the fallout.

The seller's terms are in breach of eBay policy - once upon a time, it was actually ok to have in your terms that anyone using PP had to pay for registered (it was, and is, not allowed to be more than the actual cost, BTW, which is currently $3.80 for letters, and $2.95 for SOD on parcels), then it shifted to being ok to offer discounts for alternative payment methods (in other words, you had to quote for registered postage to everyone, then mention those paying by bank deposit or whatever could pay less for unregistered), now you're not allowed to do either.

Using the cart would mean you could buy / pay instantly, giving the seller no chance to issue a new invoice....

but personally I wouldn't buy from them, either.

Their return policy and practices alone look set to eventually get them into trouble, and not just with buyers.

I'm really surprised he can get away with it all.

Sure, he has in huge print in his ad that paypal users have to pay extra for insurance. registered post.

But I was under the impression that sellers were supposed to send items by trackable means anyway & that was supposed to be included in your postage.

Sellers get hit if someone puts in a claim and there was no tracking.

Then a few people have said they were sent the wrong thing and had to pay return postage.

I'd like to see him try that on me these days. Or on a lot of other buyers.

He needs to get with the program or he is going to hit troubled times ahead.

I don't see how he can get in trouble he clearly states

there is also a big banner saying the same. buyers are prewarned it's not something sprung on them.

Why would anyone buy from a high volume seller with a feedback score of less than 99% (my limit is 99.5%), I would suspect paying an extra five bucks to be the least of my worries buying from that seller.

I haven't really kept up with the changes, but have they allowed you to make buyers pay paypal fees above the price? I saw this for item 121706506425

No, that's never been allowed.

eBay have a blanket policy now against discouraging, or encouraging, specific payment methods, and payment surcharges and/or discounts for specific methods (that seller is doing both), is not allowed at all.

Only policy that counts is ebays policy, anything a seller puts in their description has no weight. The way Ebay is going individual listing descriptions will be phased out altogether with only their options to select, along with item specifics.

If buyers get put off side seller will get defects, get enough defects and seller becomes restricted.

Sellers have to toe Ebays line sooner or later if thy want to stay

there is nothing wrong with saying buyer has to choose express or insured post using paypal.

please show me the policy that states this is not allowed because I can't find it.

Harley it comes, I think, under the clause about discouraging the use of Paypal. I matters not about the actual wording or what policy it comes under ebay have said it is not allowed. Ebay also clearly state that if registration or insurance is required then the seller can only charge the actual cost of that service unless it is included in the total postage amount. I would be pretty amazed if there were a courier company that charged a round five bucks for the equivalent of registration and insurance and AP certainly don't have any service that costs that.

It is also against Paypal's own terms to charge buyers extra for using Paypal.

Anyway as I said before I don't imagine why anyone would buy from them even if they gave a five dollar discount never mind a surcharge.

Yes it will most likely be his undoing but as I said I can't see it written in any policy I have looked at.

Depends on whether the policy is interpreted one way or another, both by members and eBay (by which I mean, reps are relatively notorious for interpreting and applying the same policy in different ways).

It's certainly debateable, but also very feasible that making only PayPal users pay extra for registered post is "discouraging the use of PayPal", which is against policy.
