I've been using ebay for a while, and only recently come across Global Shipping

Is the seller making extra profit or is a seperate company over charging for our parcels to arrive in Oz,

A 50 gram ball of knitting wool does not usually cost eight english pounds to shop to Oz

or times the wool by 6 balls and the price is over fifty pounds????

Or a piece of paper e.g. a knitting pattern costs eight pounds.

I don't get this at all.

Who makes the money ..... the seller .... or a shipping company ??

The seller does not make any money from the GSP.

The service is run by logistics company Pitney Bowes....the seller sends the goods to PB who then repack it and process the shipping documents before handing the parcel to the overseas courier company.

It has always been a very expensive service for saller and lighter ites although it is more cost effective for larger and heavier items.

It is also a rather slow service so be prepared to wait for your items.

The usual advice given on the boards is to avoid sellers using the GSP.

... or contact the seller and see if they will send using Royal Mail.

Buying wool from the UK? Isn't that akin to shipping coal to Newcastle?

Thank you for that information

I was wondering what the heck was going on.

Surely the sellers can pop something in a post bag and buy a stamp.

Especially if they are going to lose a LOT of business, with all the excessive costs that are going to the buyer.

I did ask one seller a week ago, to change to Royal Mail and it was a quarter of what global shipping charges.

My recent seller (this week) doesn't seem to know whats happening.

It looks like I will have to search out the Royal Mail sellers now.

I got the shock of my life when I saw the paypal page come up with such high postage

What an absolute rip off 😞

No way I'd buy from that seller with those disgusting replies. I also wouldn't buy wool from overseas when we have the best wool in the world right here.

I certainly wouldn't be paying that, or anything, for a photocopy of a pattern. Especially when there are hundreds of thousands online for free.

I most certainly wouldn't be paying for a pattern for a granny square rug. You don't need a pattern to go round and round changing colours every row or 2. Anyone who can crochet knows how to make one because they are a starting point for most people.

Seriously OP, buy your wool from Aus and search online for free patterns. There are hundreds of sites around.

Normally I check feedback, and was so tired I forgot all about it.

Perth is very short of wool shops now, and the patterns for sale at one knitting shop are for sale at between $16 and $25, They are old and are on display in lever arch files and are not in good condition.

With the exception of the larger and/or heavier items which can be cheaper to post through the GSP like lyndal mentioned, most sellers shipping small, light items through it are those who want to sell to overseas buyers, but do not want to risk sending to overseas buyers (I do both, and I certainly know first-hand that while the risks of posting to international customers are almost the same ones as you might experience posting domestically, it's also a lot more expensive when something goes wrong, so there are some sellers that would rather sell fewer items at lower risk to them).

The GSP is reportedly not well-implented, either. I don't know about sellers in the UK too much, but I do know that not so long ago, in the US eBay would check a listing to see if it qualified for the GSP and just implement it, so a lot of sellers found their items were being offered internationally when they intended to list/sell domestically only, and the first they heard about it was when an international buyer asked a question or bought the item - this may still be happening.

That seller is not using the GSP so why blame the system for what a seller does when they do not use it. I have no idea what a pattern would weigh, but there is more to Postage and HANDLING than the cost of the stamp. If you are unhappy with the seller's charges don't buy from her.

As for the feedback.....while it is not very professional the seller must get very fed up with people who do not read the listings.....she is obviously selling photocopies of the patterns.

Not sure why you need a pattern for that rug....if you can crochet a square you should be able to work out a colour scheme for yourself and just do as many squares as you need for the size rug you want to make.

I have a wooden chest full of rugs made by my grandmothers well over 70 years ago....various sizes, some multi coloured stripes, some squares in multicolours, some in tones of the one colour. I even have a pastel coloured square bassinet/pram cover made by my grandmother for my eldest daughter who is now 46.

Thanks Stawks....do you remember approximately what it was through the GSP?

I have never bought anything like that through the GSP but I have bought some Thelwell prints long before the GSP and I don't remember them being unduly expensive to post from the UK.

Gosh, OP was talking different things, like wool and such,

but I think the GSP was charging something like AU$28

for an A4 envelope

Reading that sellers fb though. They are selling photocopies of photocopies

of photocopies, ad infinitum - people can't read them anyway.

So many free patterns on-line

edit: just checked that item again.

In the listing seller states 'please check my feedback for quality'

I think I would be rather annoyed at that sort of postage price too Stawks.....I thought the currently listed postage a bit on the high side but not enough to cause the OP the angst it obviously was.

I was looking on the Crafts board recently and the lovely posters there were coming up with patterns for an OP that were exactly what she wanted but she only had the sketchiest of descriptions.
