this is a hyperthetical question if a seller post an item same day or next business day as per the postage policy and the item arrives after the eBay guestimated time is it ethical to give the seller a less than 5 star rating.

What would you do!

No, it would not be fair to punish the seller becuase of ebay's fantasy land delivery dates

Put yourself in their place, how would you feel if someone punished you after you sent an item the same day but got marked down because 'ebay said'

I answer as a seller. If you are happy with how the seller handled your sale ie posting when they said they would, then 5 stars are deserved.

I have an Aust Post business account, and when I prepare a label for posting, the system advises me of an estimated delivery date. This date is ALWAYS several days later than eBay's - I don't know how eBay calculate their guesstimate but I do know that they make no allowances for weekends, public holidays etc.

To then ask a buyer if a seller succeeded or failed based on this guesstimate is, in the opinion of this seller, just making trouble where none exists. If the question was "Did the seller post within the timeframe in the listing?", fair enough.

Most eBay sellers try very hard to do the best by their customers, and eBay's interference just causes stress and anger. A lot of buyers deliberately list their posting time as 5 days instead of 1 day, thus forfeiting their Top Seller rating, just to avoid being stung by an innocent buyer honestly answering a flawed survey.

So, short answer, 5 stars for a seller who posts when they said they would.

Here endeth the rant,

Marina.

If a seller has no room for improvement on what they provide they dont deserve anything less than top rating, as by definition they can't do better.

It is totally unethical to give the seller less than 5 stars....the star rating is for when the seller posted the item, not for when AP delivered it.

If you want to be totally honest you should only answer the ebay question about when the parcel arrived with a NO but even that is a bit mean IMO as the seller has not control of the parcel once it is given to AP.

Are you aware that sellers can now see who gives them low star ratings? A low rating for a seller who has fulfilled their terms will probably see you on that sellers Blocked Buyers List....and sellers talk to each other.

But if so, I would expect that seller to send a message to buyers, apologising for the delay and explaining.

I'm in a somewhat similar position to you. I bought an item back on 14th March I think it was. Said in the ad it would be posted within 10 business days but it wasn't, not by a long shot.

A seller who doesn't live up to what they say in the ad.... no way do they deserve 5 stars.

Your seller may not deserve a neg as after all they did post the item eventually, but as far as postage time goes, one star is all they deserve.

All sellers get 5 stars from me 🙂 unless of course the item arrives really late like 4-6 weeks in which case I would leave no feedback at all. I hardly ever look at the guesstimated time and don't really keep track of when items arrive. I also love keeping parcels unopened for a bit - just long enough that I 'forget' what I bought so it would be like getting presents 🙂 :)

That reminds me, I've still got a couple from ages ago that I haven't opened yet! You're right, it is like getting presents. I know what's in one of them. I sort of remember what's in the other, but can't remember which variety. It's probably time I opened them. I've already left feedback. I've bought heaps of things from both the sellers, so highly unlikely they're will be anything wrong with them. If there is, too bad!

Only happened twice -- once an overseas purchase that was really late - a no show after almost two months- I just contacted them and got refunded straight away. The other was a cute pair of handmade button earrings that I bought mid December. When end of January came I figured it probably got lost in the mail. It's funny because being a handmade seller myself I felt awful about telling her the item didn't arrive (that's the sort of news I dread myself) and because I won it really cheap I just let it go and didn't make contact. Oddly enough it arrived in March! Broken too- oops- I sent a msg to the seller telling her that maybe in future a he needed to send her earrings as a large letter (she just had 70c postage) and with a bit more padding 🙂 sorry for babbling on but the point is I just don't leave feedback for such exchanges.

To me, when I give feedback about a seller, it is mainly to inform other buyers. And if someone had a concern about a transaction that was the seller's responsibility, then as a buyer, I know I would like to hear about it.

I wouldn't necessarily expect to see a neg given but I like to know if eg an item had faults that were not mentioned, or if the seller was slow to post and so on. It is also good to know if a seller is quick to communicate and deals well with any problems. It can influence whether you decide to buy or not. I know with a couple of things lately, comments about how quickly the seller posted led me to go ahead and purchase.

So in your first case,(from my point of view) your seller was top notch, whereas in the second case, the packing could have been better.

I suppose the trick is to be able to describe the bad bits, but in a nice way. I'm juggling with what to say over one of my own transactions. An item not posted for a month after I bought it. I will give a positive but I will mention the down side. Other buyers deserve to know & it might be a wake up call to the seller if they get enough similar comments.
