I wouldnt recommend cancelling the echeque, rather just put in an INAD claim.

I accidently made an echeque payment (was suppose to come from CC) to the sum of $4000 (non-ebay). I cancelled it with my bank straight away, and got my supplier to cancel it their end as well.

Everything was fine until about a fortnight later when my Paypal acount was suddenly in debit for $4000. I then got an email from Paypal claiming I owed them this money. For some reason they decided they had reimbursed me the $4000 that hadnt even been paid.

I had to prove to them that no money had gone into my bank account - included officially printed bank statements etc, and numerous hours on the phone to Paypal.

In the meantime every cent I earned went straight to Paypal.

It took over 2 weeks to sort out.

Paypal eventually refunded me the funds they had taken....without so much as an apology.

You really can't do that. I don't think you can cancel an echq as it is not a cheque persay, simply awaiting clearance to go through. In all fairness you need to contact the seller and advise them of this change of heart, and hope they are understanding. It is very bad form to just attempt to cancel without any notice to the seller.

Why have you changed your mind?

I think you had better have the best excuse as to buy something means you have agreed to the terms and conditions of this site and legally are obliged to.

There is a process in place for you to do this and its honest and not fraud. (I hope you know that cancelling a check is fraud)

Contact the seller as a lot of them have a return policy and it would be good to let them know ASAP as they may have already posted your item, thinking they are dealing with an honest and upright person.

Also be prepared to be on a lot of black lists after asking this question.... or give the best excuse we have ever heard.

No you cannot cancel an echeque unless there are compelling reasons like fraud in which case you would perhaps be able to puersuade Paypal to cancel it. Change of mind is not a reason. You cannot just buy and then not pay, if you do you will have strikes recorded against your account, more than one of those and you will be on many sellers blocked bidders list.

You could perhaps contact the seller and ask if they can refund you once the payment clears less enough to cover their fees and some for their wasted time and not send the item but I don't think many sellers would agree to do so.

I have had an echeque from a buyer not clear in the past. It appeared as cancelled. When I questioned Paypal as to whether the buyer had cancelled it, they advised me that buyers cannot cancel an echeque. They suggested that the reason it was cancelled was that there were insufficient funds in the buyer's bank account.

You should contact the seller, and if they have a change of mind refund policy, request a refund once they receive your payment and a mutual cancellation. It is inappropriate not to bother to advise the seller that you no longer want the item.

In ebay-land an e-cheque is a transfer from your bank, through paypal to a seller's account.

You cannot "cancel" it once it has gone through, for obvious reasons.

You need to open a dispute for "item not as described" and go through the proper channels for getting a refund.

I am quite sure no one meant to 'jump' at you, perhaps in future when you have a question, you could put in a little more information. Just the way your OP sounded, then your second post - I don't want to buy it now' would have had every seller reading here rushing to put you on their BBL. It is also most unusual for a seller to send any item until they have the money cleared, so you can see where the confusion lay

It really isn't that hard, just follow the advice to open INAD and you will get your refund via paypal as soon as you have posted the 'faulty' guitar back and the dispute is closed. You sound as though you are getting really stressed, and seriously, it's not worth the headache, some sellers are not as honest as others, just as some buyers try to do the wrong thing also and that's why the resolution options are there. Good Luck

I think this sellers behaviour is 'offensive. 2 days and no reply.

When you sign in to Paypal and look at your transactions, does it still say it's an eCheque or does it say that it has cleared? That's the first confusion. ?:|

Most sellers wouldn't send an item, especially a pricey item, before an eCheque had cleared.

It's not a hassle to open an item not as described dispute and I guarantee you will get the attention of the seller if they ARE ignoring your emails. That is the whole idea of the Paypal protection.
