Just discovered the new way that paypal is making money, thats applied to you when you pay using another credit card instead of using paypal.

Today I paid $379.96 for an item -as i purchased from france that is the converted amount as shown on my order and which i paid, checking my bank account later i see i have been charged $400.13,so here goes the ball passing i think, first i ring paypal -go thru the story ",get told that i better talk to ebay as they:"paypal" only charge what ebay tells them,so of to ebay and get told that they have told paypal to charge me only the 379.96 and so they suggest i should talk to paypal again,so back on the phone i go and finally get some sort of the actually thruth and that is that the extra charge is what paypal has added for me using my debit card and not using paypal card, the charges are 2.5 % +$5 +payapl do their own conversion which happens to be higher than what ebay did, just more greed and really it must border on discrimination-forcing you to use paypal card.

eBay use one currency conversion depending on which financial institution they are tied with.

PayPal uses another and your credit card uses a different one again.

That is the most common reason why a price fluctuates when purchasing in another currency.

Some credit cards are considerably dearer on conversions than PayPal and some are cheaper.

understand all that but doesnt explain why when you pay a seller the total of the orderin $aus ,so it all converted etc but paypal has no rights to basicaly reissue the bill for their advantage all because i dont use paypal direct,if they cant get monies out of sellers then the hit the buyer.

Do you mean you chose for your bank to do the conversion rather than paypal? If that's the case, the fee showing in your bank statement would be the bank's conversion fee and nothing to do with paypal.

Having said that, when I did a lot of buying from the US a few years ago, every so often the bank would charge me a conversion fee when I'd already paid it to paypal. I asked at the bank but got fobbed off with an unsatisfactory answer. I shouldn't have been charged by the bank because paypal did the conversion and the bank shouldn't have even known I was buying from overseas. Maybe paypal slipped up somehow and didn't charge it to my bank as $au but it was only small amounts that were extra and it wasn't worth the hassle of chasing it up, especially as I thought I'd be wasting my time.

What you're saying doesn't make sense at all so maybe you should ring the financial ombudsman and see what they have to say, but make sure you write it all down clearly first so they can understand what you're talking about. It's very hard to understand what you've written here.

There's no such thing as a paypal card, or not that I'm aware of.

The AU dollar amount that shows on an overseas listing is never correct because it doesn't factor in the conversion fee. I usually add between 3 & 4% to get the right amount. Did the $379.96 show when you made the payment through paypal or did that amount only show on the listing? If it only showed on the listing then the rest is because of the conversion fee. It's always been this way.

hi,will try again sorry for confusion to all.

i brought and paid for an item from france,i waited for the ebay invoice to be issued and when it was it was in australia dollars having been converted from euros, total being $379.96 aud.

I authorised that amount to be paid using a debit card that isnt linked to paypal,i do have a card linked to paypal but had insufficent funds in it,so i choose the option on the invoice of debit card.

now those transactions are handled by paypal and that is when they charged the extras.totaling $400.13

There is something wrong with that scenario. If the item was listed in Euros then it would be invoiced in the same currency. It only gets converted to AU$ when you go to pay as you have a choice of allowing paypal to do the conversion or allowing your bank to do it.

The seller cannot send the invoice in AU$ if the item was not listed in that currency.

As of recently we have had extra charges added by Credit card providers, when using a credit card for International purchases, and buying directly from International sites, without going anywhere near eBay or Paypal. The charges are similar to what you have encountered. I suggest you check with your credit card provider.

There is a cross border fee....it has been in existance for some time but not all banks have been charging it.

Maybe the OPs bank has just started adding it to their international transactions.

It is not a paypal fee.

Looks like PayPal's conversion fee to me - they charge 4% above actual exchange rate to perform a currency conversion when making a payment (they also charge the seller more for receiving a payment funded by a foreign credit card). It looks like your final payment was around 5% more than eBay's conversion, but without knowing the original currency amount, it would be hard to check to confirm. However, if you ever want to check what the final payment amount will be when paying by PayPal for an item listed in another currency, you can log into PayPal and use a conversion calculator.

eBay's "conversion" is never the final payment amount, because they don't always display using the most up to date conversion rates, and because they don't know how the payment will be funded, so they don't include conversion fees. This may change when they take over payment processing in a year or two.
