Price restrictions

I tried to list a musical instrument and was not allowed to put it at the price I wanted. I listed it lower and emailed ebay asking why I couldn't list it at the price I wanted.
The reply was - your item is listed! Watch for best result.
I questioned that and asked for an explanation, with no response. About 6 emails later I've still had no response. Any advice?

Was it a very expensive item?

When you are new to selling you have restrictions on the number of items you can list as well as the total value of the items you can list.

Generally emails to Ebay are replied to by bots which look for keywords and reply with cut-and-paste answers.

Live chat is a little bit better - at least you're usually speaking with a person.

You would be much better off calling them, or using the "have us call you" option.

Brsal-I can see the listing for $5000. Is that what you wanted it to show as?

As someone new to ebay, you may struggle to see anything wrong with the ad as such. There may be a couple of things you're not aware of.

It comes over as a genuine ad to me, and by most normal standards it seems a perfectly reasonable ad- but you might run into trouble with ebay. It sounds like a great idea to invite people to come and see the guitar & try it out before they commit to buy. That's a logical thing I presume any serious player/buyer would be keen to do. But ebay will frown on you exchanging addresses before someone commits to buy.

I noticed that your ad format has a $5000 Buy it now price on it but also a big 'Make an offer' tab in blue.

In the body of your ad, you say the price is not negotiable. That is fair enough as it is your item and your right to sell it at the price you are happy at, but you probably need to set up the ad without the Make an offer tab because while it is there, some people won't read the ad properly and are just as likely to make you offers.

1972 Gretsch White Falcons are going for around the $10,000 mark.

Maybe an auction starting at $5,000 may have been better?

Otherwise, as soon as someone asks for your phone number/address ebay will

jump on both of you and ban you for 7 days.

They are paranoid about 'off ebay' sales.

They must commit to buy before you can supply any info.

You're right. It should be auction format starting at $5000.

It has 12 watchers so presumably it has a lot of interest and $5000 is underpriced.

I just had a brainwave (well, for me)

I wouldn't be surprised if brsal thinks make an offer means to offer more than $5000.

If so, he could be in for a rude awakening as I imagine most regular ebayers see make an offer as an invitation to offer slightly less.

So definitely... this is an ad that should be in auction format & I think it could then go above $5000. As it is currently set up, $5000 is the most he is likely to get & that would be a shame.

it is really not a good idea to post your phone number on a public forum for anyone in the world to read (you don't need to be an eBay member,or in Australia to read here)

eBay staff don't read here though

I will ask a mod to remove it for your privacy but please be very careful of any scammy calls you might get

Thanks for that. I get that they might be paranoid about ofsite comunication,but I'd never even think of not giving them their fair cut of the sale. I'll try relisting as you suggest & hope it works. I'm selling instruments due to being invalided after a hit & run car accident, I don't wont to sell, I have to to pay bills.

I can't seem to find how to unlist my instrument. I want to erase it and relist it at $5k starting price but I don't know how. I may be a good musician but I'm hopeless on ebay. I also have a 1967 Gretsch Country
Gentleman to list & I'm not sure how to go about it.

DO NOT go with an auction with a Buy it now price is my suggestion. Just a straight auction for 7 days with a weekend in between.

Others may disagree.

I'd leave out this bit -

If your photos of the Gretsch are as good, you'll do fine.

Just be aware that for something this pricey, scammers might try it on.

Just remember, a buyer must commit to buy before you can send any details like phone no.

Someone else may have better suggestions, but I'd take down the listing for now

If you are using Seller Hub use the End a listing It's in one of the "blocks" when you select Overview).

Before you relist see if you have any Promotional offers,(further down on the Overview page).

Then see if you have an offer there that lets you list for free and you: Pay no Insertion and Final Value Fees on

any items you list & sell.

That way you don't have any fees to pay,(just make certain it falls in your time frame and you have to accept

the offer before you list),

Edit: And go with the 10 days and the rest as stated by Stawks.

Go with what stawka said.

If you can afford to wait a week or two to see if any special selling offers come up, go tazz has the right idea too.

Relist as an auction. Exactly what stawka said, with no Buy it now price. That way, there is no top price & if there is a bit of interest, you may get more than you expected. Start the auction though at the very lowest price you are willing to accept. If you are not happy with $5000, if you want a min of $8000 & ebay won't let you start at that price, then ebay isn't the right selling venue for you with this item right now. You might need to sell a few small things over a month or two till you establish a track record & can sell at a price you want.

Just a word of caution. Someone else may be able to give you the relevant links but make sure no one from overseas can bid. Just having your ad say available in Australia unfortunately isn't enough. You'll need to actually block other regions on your seller choices.

If someone from overseas begs for you to let them buy & promises to pay postage etc, just say sorry, no, pick up only, and stick to it.

PS If you really want $8000 for it, work on pulling that ad down right this minute, before someone pushes the buy it now tab for $5000, because that could happen. If it does, you can plead ignorance with the buyer and decline to sell, no one can force you to hand over the guitar for $3000 less than you want, but it wouldn't be a good start to your ebay career. So get working to pull the ad now.
