Credit Card Chargeback

Hi all,

Not sure on what happens here, situation is as follows

Ebay member purchases an item from our store, must have used a credit card through paypal to pay for item, either way PayPal set these funds as cleared. This was back on the 28th Feb. Item was sent with Aust Post e-parcel tracking with signature and delivered a couple of days later. Buyer has never left any feedback (as is more often the case these days)

Fast forward to today, I get a message from PayPal stating that charge back has occurred due to the card holder claiming was an unauthorised transaction. I have so far now sent proof of delivery by means of tracking number as well as a copy of the delivery screen with the persons signature on it.

I have also tried to call the number in the ebay sale only to be initially told that this person is not known, I advised who I am and asked if the address is correct, person told me is the correct address (so I know was delivered to this address) however when I then asked if they were aware of this issue with the transaction I was very sternly told where to go.

Where do I stand with this do you guys think. I have as far as I can tell done everything by the book in so far as sending to the registered address, I have tracking and signature (of course there is no way I can state the signature belongs to anyone in particular as ID is never asked for) Do you think I will be covered under the PayPal protection system here.

Is not a huge amount but it really irks me when a seller does everything by the book and can still run this risk.

Maybe your buyer was the person on the phone and wants a refund and a free item - maybe not. During the Paypal dispute you'll need to submit as much information as possible. The tracking number and signature should help them to decide in your favour however they can't do anything about the chargeback and I think compensation will come from their funds.

By the way phone Paypal if necessary and if you don't receive enough help ask to speak with a supervisor.

You should qualify for seller protection - just make sure all the relevant documentation is uploaded to the dispute, particularly the one that shows the address the item was sent to. (The signature may help with the chargeback being unsuccessful, but it's proof of postage to the delivery address that will give you seller protection regardless of whether the chargeback is successful).

OP, I have currently a similar situation. Charge back for unauthorised credit card use, paypal has held the funds for a couple of weeks now. I have uploaded tracking advise. I tried calling the buyer, to find that the number was disconnected. I don't think there is anything more to do but wait for paypal to decide.

If you have signature tracking proof of delivery, paypal should cover you with seller protection. But it can take a while for it to be decided.

On the link is an industr that would suffer the most from friendly fraud....they log the IP address and exact time the transactions were made and the sites visited....what a good idea

friendly fraud has blossomed since the advent of laxed rules that make it easier for past credit defaulters to get credit or indeed purchase debit cards that have no checks attached.

Of course it could be a heap of betting inustry malarkey to try and and scare those "friendly frauders" sitting on the fraud fence to jump to the legal side ?:|

The online casino will definitely prevent the customer from using its services.

And the player cannot hope to get away with this.

The transactions are made through secure channels that prevent abuse.

Also the details of the transaction are recorded and archived and hence can be retrieved for investigation.

The security processes in place are so strong that not only the exact date and time of the transaction is known but also the IP address of the computer from which the transaction was carried out.

Hence due investigation will prove that the player made the transaction.

Only a lot of people would have spent time and effort and unnecessary cost would have been incurred.

might sound like a silly question, but did you post to the address that appeared on the eBay "Your item" sold notification OR the address on the PayPal payment notification? The reason I ask is that there have been some posters in recent times who have posted to the eBay address and had no coverage because the PayPal address was different to the eBay address.

Secondly, check the buyers feedback and see if there are any comments there that might indicate that this is 'pattern behaviour' by this buyer ID. If there is a pattern, that would certainly bolster any defence against a chargeback.

Thirdly, put that eBay ID onto your Blocked Bidder List.

Fourthly, please do come back and update this thread with information as this case proceeds as that information will help others who find themselves in the same/similar situation.

Super, if you can get the signed delivery docket from the carrier by email, then you do a screen shot. And from memory of the member, the3coopers and that thread, he stated that you are entitled to a copy of that.

We had a guy buy a plant from us. Item was sent EXPRESS post. Buyer received the plant in three days. (Plants packed and sent will last a fortnight). Buyer claimed, plant looks wilted and will not survive. (Did not send any photo of the plant by the way). We sent the buyer a return shipping label and asked the buyer to return the item back to us. Buyer purposely closed their Ebay case and opened a charge-back with their financial institution. Buyer won. We as sellers lost our payment, buyer kept our item and were charged a fee by Ebay for the case! A clear case of a buyer scamming a seller. Ebay sellers get zero protection.
