casbit said. Wouldn't it be good if the ebay selling system worked like this. if a person bids or buys an item and hasn't paid within 3 or 4 days, the item is automatically cancelled and relisted, or sold to the 2nd highest bidder. All without the seller having to do anything or incur a defect or relisting fee. The non payer is banned for a week or even a month unless they can prove it was unavoidable for not paying - a hospital stay or something like that.

It would keep buyers paying on time, and the serial non-payers would find themselves out in the cold.

---------------------

Wouldn't it be good if the ebay selling system worked like this. if a person bids or buys an item and hasn't paid within 3 or 4 days, the item is automatically cancelled.....

This could work as an opt in system, but sellers would have to be careful with sales from bank deposit customers.

For a lot of sellers though it would be a boon if ebay automatically cancelled a sale and refunded fees after 4 days.

I can't see it happening though. Call me cynical, but I think ebay makes a pile of money from sellers who probably never get around to claiming fees back when sales fall through. They won't want to change that.

and relisted....

No, I don't think that would be helpful. Not all sellers might be available 4 days later, it might not suit them & then they would have to go in and cancel listings.

.....or sold to the 2nd highest bidder

No, no no!!! Absolutely not!! No! (have I said that)

That is totally unreasonable. What you would be doing is taking the present frustrations of sellers and the delays they have when a bad bidder refuses to pay, and popping them instead on the heads of innocent buyers.

Look at it from my point of view as a buyer. I might bid on something I want. I might not be desperate for it but I might be sort of hoping to have it within a week or so. So.. maybe I watch an auction, put in a bid on the final day or few hours but I am outbid and lose the auction.

In my opinion, that should be the end of the matter.

As a customer, I should be free to move right onto another auction for a similar product that perhaps is ending soon.

Why should there be any expectation that I will have to wait 4 days to find out if the winning bidder pays or not? That's not my concern & it shouldn't be.

By all means, offer other bidders a second chance offer. No worries there. I have sometimes bought things that way.

But don't mandate it that I have to.

The main problem is you would send buyers away in droves, a lot of customers have trouble understanding a bid is binding, how much worse would it be if you tried to explain a bid lasted for 4 days after someone else won?

No, keep it simple.

---. The non payer is banned for a week or even a month

Yes, I would like to see that. Auto ban for a month for non paying bidders. Can't see it happening though.

My feeling is more and more sellers will go down the path of buy it now/instant payment required. Like other websites.

I know this is a post that has been done before, but what can we,as a large community,do to make Ebay penalise non paying bidders?.This is becoming a big problem,as the non payers know that nothing will happen to them. You can't even leave negative feedback, not that this would do any good,as they will leave you negative feedback as a payback.Ebay goes on about looking after its members, well i think Ebay should put a plan in place to stamp out non payers. If they don't,what can we do to change their minds?.

You can use the tools that ebay has given you as a seller to protect yourself from non payers.

Open a non payer dispute, close it after 4 days and give the buyer a strike,

Put your blocks in place to prevent members with more than one strike from buying from you.

Hello, yes this is all well and good to block a buyer with a bad track record, but there is still nothing in place to penalise any non paying member.I t doesn't matter whether they have done it before or whether it is their first time, something needs to be done to stamp out non payers.I already have people that can't bid on my items, but would like Ebay to take some responsibility and penalise non payers.

Ugh I agree with you! It's just utter rubbish that we can't leave negative feedback for deadbeat bidders. I'm currently dealing with one right now who can't even be bothered to reply and that's just RUDE... if they've screwed over another seller before and that seller had been able to leave feedback for them, then I would have been forewarned... similarly if I could leave them appropriate feedback then sellers in future could be warned - but nope. Instead we just have to open a file and sit and wait and relist and hope the same won't happen next time the item sells.

If a deadbeat buyer has a phone number listed, is it okay to give them a call and ask them to at least respond to the opened complaint?! I'm seriously annoyed here, it's such a waste of my time trying to chase this idiot.

I know where you are coming from,i have two non paying cases right now. They don't bother responding to emails by myself or Ebay.If they ignore the emails by Ebay, then they should be penalised for this.Just giving us credit back for our listing is not good enough.Ebay ripped us off by making us use Paypal, stating that this was the only safe way to be paid [according to them],so why don't they give us sellers some protection?.Surely if enough members got together,we could make Ebay come to its senses.

Yup been done before and personally I would love to see a LOT more of these sorts of posts. Might make someone at ebay who has more than 1 brain cell sit back and think ...hmm hang on !

I have one at the moment also (different ID) . Had an item for auction over 10 days and it was ticking along nicely until about 4 mins before it finished. This clown comes in and drops 3 bids on it and wins. I thought great. Then not more than 2 mins later I get an email saying quote - Dont want it anymore please cancel sale. So I mutter and grumble and do a 'Buyer changed mind' cancalation and guess what ...its been 7 days and the twit still has not accepted it. Sent a second chance offer and no reply from them ...so all in all great waste of time.

Collectively, as sellers who list auctions, we can and must report all non-paying bidders by opening a case with ebay.

Also, putting your blocks in place for listings.

It is very frustrating but if every seller did this; what a difference that would make.

As stated before would YOU give your hard earned money to a complete stranger over the internet?

-----------------

That is exactly how ebay worked before the advent of paypal.

People judged things very much on feedback and a degree of trust, I suppose, because I recall starting out on another account with zero feedback and people still did buy. Mind you, we sold small items.

I have to admit though that as a buyer, I got let down occasionally-I paid quickly, then no item, no replies to messages. These days no, I won't pay except by paypal, I learnt that lesson the hard way.

My impression of ebay now is it is an ever changing beast. Feedback as such will change drastically and instant payment will be required for more and more transactions before that transaction is considerd sold. That will bring it more in line with other sales sites.

I am interested in the person who sold something via auction then had a message within 2 minutes to say the bidder wanted them to cancel the transaction. Yet no reply to the cancellation request.

Can that seller then start an unpaid item dispute? I hope so.

My impression of the transaction is the bidder couldn't care less about the transaction & assumed once they sent the message the seller could do all the work to cancel everything. They never gave it another thought, maybe never even checked their messages.

They are the sort who need to be kicked off ebay but it isn't happening. That's why instant payment will become more and more common.

Can that seller then start an unpaid item dispute? I hope so.

Not unless the rules have changed very recently. One reason I always go down the unpaid item dispute as then the buyer gets a well deserved strike, they are unable to buy from sellers who have their blocks in place and if they do leave a neg feedback before the dispute ends the seller can have it removed. Some people say they do a cancellation as it is quicker but as is evidenced here that is only if the buyer agrees with the request straight away.
