Makes little difference AFAIC. As they are being sent at letter rate there is no seller protection, and if the items are listed as "free postage" it could be argued that there is no excess postage to refund.

Anyway, the proper time to be querying this is prior to placing the order. Contact the seller and ask if they're prepared to send all 3 items in the same package at a reduced charge, but with retail prices of only $4 I can't imagine the seller would be getting rich in a hurry.

Seriously?

Here's what I would do as a buyer - expect my items to be sent, at no additional cost to me. End of. How they arrive is completely and utterly irrelevant. If I bought them all separately, and then requested an invoice, you do realise the seller has no way to discount the total on free post items, right? And why the heck are you ssuming some kind of refund should be due? Maybe the seller's $4 free-post pricing accounts for multiple purchases already. Maybe almost all of their buyers purchase several items at once, so they priced their stuff at $4.00 free post instead of $5 free post - ever think of that?

And I'll tell you something else.... I have purchased several items from several different sellers on eBay, who I know full well represent the same major company. They're not all free post items (but each one does have their own P&H discounts set up), and they all get sent in a single package. I have never even considered asking for a refund on postage costs, I just don't care enough about 50c, 70c, or whatever it might actually be, to waste my time even thinking about it let alone asking for it.

Good grief.

It's up to each seller to decide how to price items and how they handle the postage of items. Examining other seller's pricing (and/or reasoning behind it) is problematic because all you can see as someone who is not the seller is the end-price.

It's pointless to try and pose what I suspect is an ethical hypothetical when you can't even presume the full circumstances. You simply can't assume that 3 x $4 free post items automatically means more postage has been paid than necessary if the seller combines into a single package, because you have absolutely no idea what portion of that $4 was allocated to postage costs.

You want an answer to your question, well, I don't do free post. I do get a lot of buyers purchasing several items and paying for them separately. If I combine into a single package I refund the excess postage costs, but that is a completely different scenario, since the postage cost is accounted for separately from the item price.

All our items are listed as FREE post.

When buyers purchase multiple items they typically do so in multiple transactions as well.

This costs us an extra 30-cents for each additional transaction when paid via PayPal.

So we will typically combine them into a single package if they will fit, otherwise more than one. Or even into a 500-gram satchel if the order is large enough. We can and do decide how we mail it out.

We usually don't refund any postage cost difference as the listing says FREE. The buyer sees that up front. Nobody has ever asked us the question will there be a discount on postage for multiple items. As posted above by DG there is no discount mecahnism available via ebay invoicing anyway when items are listed as FREE psotage.

If asked do we do discount for bulk orders then that is a different matter and we will negotiate a price that way.

Sometimes if a buyer buys enough multiple items, say over $50 worth, and they pay in a single transaction we will include an extra bonus item or two for them. Normally we get back good feedback and/or a thank you note for that.

We have never had any complaints along these lines, this is just the way we handle this situation.

Surely you've been in business long enough by now to realise that not everyone will (or even can) have a business model that 100% mirrors your own practices and expectations.

And by the way, my posts are on topic, and I can choose if and how I respond, as well as what I respond to.

Edited to add - and really joe, why does it even matter what another seller would do. If you can accept that ebay's practices are ok no matter what and you just have to deal with their decisions, why can't you do the same for other sellers, hmmmm?
