I heard on the radio that even though Aust Post is busier than ever most of the increase is due to OS sellers sending parcels via Aust Post and not paying as much as we do.... so we have to cover the loss from that part of the business.

I don't know what station I heard it from and I have no idea if this is true or not.. I can't seem to find it... (too early in the morning and I need another coffee maybe???)

I do understand that and im sure it is true. Every parcel that comes into Australia through an overseas postal system ends up being a loss to them as it has to be delivered through Australia Post.

Even in saying that though they reported that have made $280 million profit last year which was an increase of 16% over there previous years profits and i am more than certain it would be due to the rise in Australian online businesses and in turn Australians buying from these business. You would think that they would want to support Australian business if it is helping profit the company rather than hurt it. I really hope it backfires on them.

I suppose at the end of the day the majority of sellers are all in the same boat, but it's not really a problem of us having to pay more, but it gives the buyer even more of a reason to buy from overseas sellers if we all have to increase our prices, meaning more loss for AP.

Australia Post just know that the majority of us are stuck using them so they think they can do whatever they want. I think it a very stupid decision.

The way i see it, what is hurting Australia Posts profits the most already is exactly what they are going to help aid due to the increase in prices.

Think of this.

If a seller in Hong Kong ships something below 500gms to AU they can do for around .60c or less (without tracking) or $2.25 (with tracking) in AU its a minimum of $7.15 (from next week) (without tracking) $10.10 (with tracking). there is a seller 3 offices down from someone I know over there that ships a minimum of 1000 packages a day to AU without tracking costs them around $600AUD … same volume by an AU seller would cost $7150 + we paid GST and tax on the sale price … not hard to work out where one should be as an eBay seller … and that doesn’t even factor the eBay fees. They pay almost nothing over there.:-(

Add to all this the fact that Aus Post refuse to negotiate a better deal for us under the UPI/ Union. (Int Postal Agreement)

If the CEO of Aus Post got off his overpaid ass and did the right thing by Australians and got a better deal for the people he is supposed to represent (us) our postage prices could drop by 1/2. Not continually rise out of control.

But he is more interested in doing it the easy way, so he can reap those huge BONUSES he gets.

Shame on Australia Post. SHAME.

Again I urge everyone to show Australia Post how we feel. If we do nothing we will all pay for it in the end. By going out of business.

Sign the petition against these ludicrous price hikes.

With an election coming up it may be a good time to get onto your local Federal members and let them know of the issues, especially regarding the International Postal Agreement.

I really had no idea about how OS sellers get to post so cheap and now I do.. this really sucks..

I bought some items from an OS wholesaler and didn't realise that they also sold on Ebay (silly me forgot to check) but I would be able to compete fairly with them if they had to pay the same postage... I could have the hometown advantage and hopefully make some sales..

But to this day I have only sold two of the 100 items I bought. I need to go to the markets to sell them...

does not seem right and I am really cheesed off now I know exactly how they can get away with it.

I just posted this info on the powersellers board and thought other sellers may be able to use some of the info if they intend contacting their local politician

Hah - they are so funny...

With all this drama and change about signature on delivery, tracking etc

Last week on C&S we could select 'if unattended, card and take back to the PO" - this morning I only have a choice of 2....

1. None or

2. If there's no-one home leave in a secure place out of the weather

If they thought carding a parcel and returning it to the PO for the customer to go and pick up was maybe a bit time consuming, just imagine the time it's going to take now for the postie/contractor to search for and locate a position that ticks both of those boxes 'secure' and 'weatherproof'

Not in my street - not in my neighbourhood even...lol

Now that they have made it cheaper for us to take our parcels to the counter and have a staff member print the label instead of us sitting at home doing, they are going to be flat out just serving customers.

I wonder which genius decided that was a good use of human resources?

AP need competition. If a courier company were to open shops in all shopping centres & operate like a postal service maybe then prices would be reasonable. Virgin post perhaps?

Lets face it - who else is there??

AP have the monopoly, and while there is no competition why should they care if they out price themselves (when only themselves are available).

Funniest thing is that Startrack moves most of AP's land freight and AP moves most of Startrack's air freight, yet the pricing is so so very different.

At least on the surface of things, the main problem with Australia Post is that they seem completely oblivious to the fact that their main competition isn't domestic parcel delivery services, but all overseas mail delivery services - which they are increasingly handing over business to, then losing money from it.

That's what I don't get - how can they not see that online Australian-based business mightn't have much choice about which postal service to use, but consumers we both all essentially rely on have a global choice about which postal service ends up with the payment for that service.

If you live in a built up area, couriers are available. I once used Fastway when I lived in Nambour. They didnt do letters and such but for parcels they were fabulous and cheaper than APO. Plus, they picked up from my home. If I wasn't living rural now, I would still be using fastway. One does have to buy upfront...but it was worth it. And I have signed the petition....not that it will do any good. The main thing that bothers me is their new website...unfathamoble, not user friendly....and the loss of the standard 500g plastic satchel for a good price. Now it is 8.35 or something...and tracked. Big deal.

Plus the overseas zones....8 zones now. I have to change 400 listings in e - t s - y where I have my main store. If I can be bothered. Plus, have to work out my own chart from their stupid zone chart in the PO brochure.

A PO worker today told me that statistics told APO that people want stuff "tracked" in my whole 8 years of selling vintage things online....I have rarely been asked to register things...nor worries about tracked items...am I the only one?? Where are there stats from...nowhere I am sure....their stats are seeing where we are selling too...and exploiting it accordingly....jilly

mitrax just because the response you got from Minister wasn't what you might want to hear, it does not mean for a second that your letter was not duly noted, indeed the more letters received the more likely it is that will be public servants writing briefs for the Minister on key matters issues raised in correspondence, including international post subsidy through domestic services.

IMO whilst I can't see the Government interfering in the profit-making activities of AP, a "review" of some of the AP activities that have legislative boundaries including parcel compensation, is not entirely unreasonable to expect if the pressure keeps up. It may be too, that such reviews or investigation are undertaken "internally".
