Hi all, could somebody please confirm the time limit for the return of an item once an ebay case is opened? I am getting several conflicting answers from different ebay reps by phone. Answers I'm getting are all over the place.

This is the case details. Buyer requested refund on 28th July. I accidently accepted the return so sent postal voucher.

Buyer failed to return item and failed to reply to communication.

I opened a case on the 10thAug, which ebay said would expire on 19th Aug if return wasn't acted upon.

Just after 9.00am Sunday 20th Aug I got an email from ebay stating the case was now closed, and funds were released.

At around midday the same day, I got another email from ebay saying the case was on hold.

I phoned them and was told they made an error and the buyer now had another 5 days to do the return, which will now expire next Friday. I just wish sellers would get as many get out of jail cards as this buyer got .It appears ebay is downright intent on getting this buyer off the hook.

Hi all, as stated earlier, this case was supposed to expire today if the item hadn't been returned, or at least the buyer replying to ebay's requests. Needless to say, nothing returned, and no contact made. So, today being the day of reckoning, I called ebay to confirm the closing date, today, but was told lo and behold that they have given him another 5 days grace to comply. I made my point in no uncertain terms that a supervisor informed me last Sunday that it was only 5 further days from that day, not another ten days. No amount of debating the issue today got me anywhere, even requesting that ebay dig up the record of the conversation with the supervisor, but that went nowhere also. It was like a recorded message being played, talking to the ebay rep on the phone. I politely terminated the call after telling them that it was getting nowhere. I just cannot believe the distance ebay will go to burn a seller, especially when the buyer drops the case and is obviously not interested.

When I asked this question from ebay, they said ''the time varies'', in other words, whatever suits ebay when it involves horsewhipping a seller. Is this a testcase or something by ebay to trial a new set of return rules, it sure looks like it. The buyer has lost interest after requesting the return, and the product has been registered in the new buyers name, so they are obviously happy with it after all. The original complaint was that there was no licence key supplied lol. I think once they read the manual, all was well, but ebay will not let this one just fade away. Why keep extending the return deadline when the buyer is not interested in returning the thing? It is extended until next Friday now, we will see what happens. Paypal locked up the funds for the first part of the return time, but once ebay said the time was up, they released the funds and did not put the lock back on for the new return date. Make of that what ever you feel like.

If PayPal have unlocked the funds, I'd let the dispute go and see what happens. Maybe if both you and the buyer ignore it it might time out on its own. It is pretty carp that eBay keep extending it, especially when you have proof the buyer has no intention of returning it.

Thanks Tippy, yes, it is supposed to expire on 30th, that's the last email from ebay. It darn well better. I have never had such poor service from an organisation in my life. Now retired, but owned a business for 45 years prior to that.

Well, as previously advised, this case was to expire today, 30th. Well guess what, just now I get another ebay email saying that it is on hold for another four days as the tracking shows the item is finally being returned. The refund was requested on 28th July, yet the buyer leaves it until now to return it. Three case deadlines have been met and extended by ebay, not the buyer. He has had ample time to steal the software from the item, and now has no need for it. It had better be showing ther same serial number as the unit that was sold. I cannot fathom why ebay has been so intent on winning this for the buyer when even the buyer wasn't interested.

Far too long for a return IMO. Just goes to show the extent that ebay will go just to get rid of a seller, one with a `100% account. They obviously do not want us honest sellers clogging up their scamming system.

All over, went to higher up in the complaint chain and case is now officially closed with no funds to be charged to me. Now that the item is supposedly on it's way, and I have been assured that I won't be asked to refund, I am not certain what I am supposed to do with the item if it shows up.

About time! Hopefully it stays closed. There is always a chance they open a PayPal dispute if they are still wanting to return officially. I'd be surprised if it has been returned, but in the event it does turn up, mark it as return to sender, not at this address, and drop it in the red box.
