postal charges

as of 22nd October

under 500g $6.60

500g $7.85

3kg $12.50

5kg $15.90

parcels up to 500g is $6.60 ...but if it's 501g then it $12.50

so if you can get the parcel weight to exactly 500g it's $7.85

am I missing something here?

I'd say that the $7.85 charge is for a pre-paid satchel up to 500 grams, as they were previously $7.20; $6.60 is the standard parcel rate for up to 500 grams where other packaging has been used.

Parcels up to and including 500g cost $6.60 Australia wide.

Parcels 501g+ depend on postcode.

Parcel Post Satchels up to and including 500g cost $7.85 and include tracking.

New parcel rates for 500g and over come into effect on 5th November.

OK the $9 US surcharge is gone. 🙂

But, what are the C&S satchel postage charges? I have not sold anything that could go in them for few months, but am just about to list some now.

I recently posted something in a Bx6 mailer, usually costs a flat-rate of $6.60. Cost me about $8 or so. Pretty sure it wasn't over 500g but can't be certain. Very strange.

Here in Perth, they ALL went up on Monday including the 500g+ satchel. I got caught out and had to pay the difference myself.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here it's not advertised (clearly enough) until the last minute or while your paying for the parcel. It's irritating.

When I send for that much, my parcels aren't huge and they always accept them, but there might come a day when I need to send something a little bigger than normal.

Anybody know?

seems like I'm not the only one confused about postal charges

I get that extra $1.25 for tracking...that is steep and going up again in November?..wish there was an alternative to Aus post

Parcels under 500g you pay by weight not size, above that and they are cubed and costs more the further they are going.

I was of the impression packages over 1 kg were cubed - and only if they were of 'boxy' dimensions - i.e. - if you can pack it in a bag the shape of a ball - it cannot be cubed.

AP has a clause about a "notional cubic weight" where they take the longest, widest, highest dimension of the odd shape to make the cube.

AP have done it to me rarely ( I bung the package in a expandle bag if they do and then they can only weigh it)

generally my local PO just do it by weight... I worry sometimes that an officious postal worker at the other end will notionally cube meaning I or the customer will end up with an underpaid bill

there is an Australia Post formula which works out whether it is going to be cubed or not - it should not be decided by particular office staff - the computer does it all for them.

It is a simple formula - easy to work out at home

Charges for parcels weighing more than 1kg that are square or rectangular in shape are assessed according to their actual weight or cubic weight equivalent, whichever is greater. The cubic weight is the parcel's volume in cubic metres multiplied by 250.

Irregular shapes

To find out the length of an irregular shaped parcel measure between the two furthest points on the surface of the article.

This length should not be more than 105cm.

To find out the girth of the item, measure around the widest part of the parcel at right angles to its length - this measurement should not exceed 140cm.

Australia Post reserves the right to apply cubic charges to a parcel weighing less than 1kg and to parcels that are irregular or cylindrical in shape
