Hi all,

I'd like to know where the responsibility lies when you download an automated potage slip from Ebay to send a package that you are selling. The package has the address that the buyer has input into Ebay and is a tracked package. The package is lost, because the buyer neglected to put the right address for his parcel pick up point. Buyer now asking for a refund for a high-value item that was lost due to them inputting the incorrect address.

Thanks

If you are referring to click & collect. hubbed or parcel point, then as far as I know the addresses are verified and supplied by ebay, with the buyer simply selecting their nearest or desired location.

It’s the buyer’s responsibility to ensure they put in the correct details. In all fairness, don’t see how eBay can find you responsible for the buyer not having the correct postage details. As long as you have the tracking number you should be ok, but just for your piece of mind contact eBay via chat and see what they say.

Buyer could very well most likely be trying to pull something, since you are a brand new seller who first listed an expensive camera. A scammer’s dream

Did you keep tracking number?

Sorry, but it very much sounds like they are trying to get the camera and keep the money

They are trying to scam you. What does the tracking number say? If the buyer has opened an item not received dispute, make sure you enter the tracking number into the dispute. DO NOT ask ebay to step in and help via a dispute or they will automatically close it in the buyer's favour. You then lose the money and the camera.

As others have said, get onto ebay asap and explain what it going on. You might have to reinforce what is going on, because they aren't real bright. If you don't have much luck, ask to speak to a supervisor.

On top of everyone else's advice it might be worthwhile contacting the carrier to investigate - they might be able to find it and return to you. If the carrier considered it truly lost then you may be able to claim some compensation from them.

Hopefully eBay will rule in your favour as you fullfilled your obligations but they don't always follow their own guidelines.

Here is the information from the eBay seller protections page

When a buyer reports that an item hasn't arrived

If you uploaded tracking information from an integrated carrier before the latest estimated delivery date and the tracking shows evidence of successful delivery:

You won't be responsible for refunding the buyer

The following protection was added to this policy on 11 April 2023. It is being introduced gradually and will apply to all sellers later in 2023. Please visit eBay Announcements for updates.

For orders up to $750, additional protections apply if you used a protected integrated carrier. If you uploaded tracking and there was at least one carrier scan before the latest estimated delivery date:

We'll automatically respond to the buyer's report

You won't be responsible for refunding the buyer

So if the item was valued at over $750, and you didn't have the signature required option, then you may not be covered by the seller protection policy

See the protection policies
