How do variation items work with item specifics?

Let's assume you sell T-shirts. You have a plain shirt and a striped shirt and each is available in various sizes. This type of product you'd generally use variation items. One for plain shirt and another for striped shirt and once you click them you select your size.

If I'm selling a single shirt I would have an item specific for size. but if my listing has multiple sizes, how does this work? Setting a single value in the size item specific makes no sense.

Anybody dealt with this?

You can add more than one in things I list so would imagine clothes are the same
