I would say option 2 and I was too silly to question it or just to honest!

I'm not worried about the extra $5 in postage.
It’s more about getting paid for the second purchase which was the pick up.

I should have cancelled it. Yes.

Ive been a member of eBay since 2003 and sold a few things but I’m not sure about managed payments. I have a 2 x payments on hold for the purchases.

i did take photos of the box I shipped them in and requested a signature on collection to ensure delivery.

If the buyer selected "pick up" with one of your items, and you ignored that or weren't aware of it due to inexperience, @donavonf, the issue has nothing to do with a scam. You have done the wrong thing in not proceeding with a pick-up ... unless I've misunderstood, and what you mean is that the buyer had no intention of picking up, but simply selected "pick up" to save on their paying the postage cost while intending that you post the item/s.

Which is correct?

Buyer decided to pick up, or

Buyer decided to use the pick-up option fraudulently, to manoeuvre you into paying for the postage while they avoided their obligation to pay for postage.

Before I add anything, I think we would need to have this point cleared up.

Also - are you fully signed up to Managed Payments? If you're not a regular seller, you may not have followed the changes that came into effect on 2nd November 2021 (and eBay members were notified about the forthcoming changes on 18 June 2020), regarding Managed Payments, and the updated requirements to a) verify your bank account by either login credentials or the microdeposit method, and b) verify your ID by providing photo ID (passport or driver licence are the most easily accepted; reportedly there are difficulties in trying to use other forms of photo ID).

If you haven't been fully signed up and verified for MP, no funds will be disbursed to you.

It is something I have done for buyers in the past. But I have never done it when postage is more than quoted. And not without prior communication.

There is no longer an option to mark as sent when pickup is selected. I archive them.

As far as postage goes, you have done your dough.

In future, if somebody plays that trick cancel using problem with buyer's address. They will get their money back, you will be refunded your fees.

Then block them. If they can't contact you prior to the sale, they are trying to game you. It's the 80/20 rule.

I really feel sorry for you, and yes this is an unscrupulous buyer who has taken advantage of you, and unfortunately it's too late to do anything about it. I so feel for you, as I know you must feel devastated.

And before you ever combine p&h, always get the 2 (or more if applicable) out & weigh them, then work out p&h. Then ask the buyer to send a request asking for combined p&h. if they don't know how, or say they can't, make a new listing eg 'For Joe Bloggs.......' and relist the 2 items with combined postage. And as Dave said, cancel the original orders using 'problem with the address'.

I would also be blocking this buyer.

Hi there, should of cancelled both sales and blocked the buyer.

The buyer had an option to request a total invoice, with the combined shipping rate then set by you. Combined shipping does not mean there is no extra cost for the additional items.

The buyer does not get to dictate postage costs.

I hope you only lose the extra shipping cost.

Ive been a member of eBay since 2003 and sold a few things but I’m not sure about managed payments. I have a 2 x payments on hold for the purchases.
[...]

the payment is on hold for 24hrs until after collection.

@donavonf, from what you have posted, you are a new or infrequent seller - and things have changed radically since you appear to have last sold anything on eBay.

If you're not signed up to Managed Payments, you won't receive any payment. Nil. Nada.

As you're a new/infrequent seller, eBay will have put a 30-day hold onto the funds anyway - even once you're signed up to MP.

As a matter of urgency, you really do need to sign up to Managed Payments (as per the link in my first post). You must have a bank account that is an everyday transaction bank account (as in, money can be taken out of it as well as put into it) - as otherwise it will not meet the requirements for Managed Payments. It must have the same account holder name (to the letter) as the name in your eBay account. It must be a personal bank account if you have a personal eBay account. (By the way, I urge you not to change your eBay account from personal to business; it cannot be reversed. Sellers can sell perfectly well with an eBay personal account and they receive perquisites that those on a "business" account do not.)

You can verify your bank account via the microdeposit method or the login credentials method. Time being of the essence, the login credentials method is definitely faster - but of course change your password once you're verified if that's how you decide to verify. The microdeposit method takes longer, and there's more potential for something to go amiss. Just a single digit error can send sellers into a nightmare of roundabouts and frustration.

Then - have your driver licence or password to hand, and ensure any photo/scan you take meets the image requirements that eBay need to verify your ID. The quality of the image must be of a good resolution and with good clarity.

Again, names need to match.

Only then will eBay be satisfied in terms of verification. There'll still be the hold, but a hold is better than an indefinite nothingness of the payment void staring back at you, Nietzsche-like.

Once you have sold enough over a reasonable timeframe (not too irregular, not too far apart), the hold will be a thing of the past. These holds - so the help pages say - will only occur if you take too long a break between sales, or you suddenly start selling much more expensive items - some change in selling behaviour that alerts the eBay bots to a disturbing or new pattern.

I'm sorry that the second option (buyer was fraudulent) is the correct one. At least you're not out a huge amount in postage, but I also hope that there's no issue with a fraudulent MBG claim. I am assuming you posted the two items (two separate transactions) in one parcel... with one tracking number...?

Fingers metaphorically crossed (without actually being superstitious).

You need to know about Managed Payments

If you are not sure, it is very unlikely you completed sign up and were verified to sell before doing so

How long ago you joined eBay and what you sold years ago does not come into it

You must sing up and be verified in order to be paid

And even after you do that, your funds will still be on hold for 30 days

Ok I think I am signed up for managed payments. As my bank account has been verified. I do recall doing this when selling an item about a year ago now. Prior to this it was just via PayPal payments (I think).

anyway the items have been sent and due to arrive to the buyer Friday. I did pay the $2 so a signature was required on delivery so I could confirm delivery.

i messaged the buyer with pictures of the packaging and shipping along with asking them for the QR code or code provided by eBay for the “pick up” and have not received a response.

right now I am just waiting to see what sort of method they may use to scam me.

1. do they claim they didn’t. Ollect and get a refund.

2. Do they also claim non delivery somehow.

🤷🏽‍♂️

Hi all,

Thought I’d give those that helped an update.

I received notification that the package arrived and reached out to the buyer again requesting the pick up codes to complete the sale and did not get a response.

messaged again each day for 3 days and on the 3rd day advised that if I didn’t get a response I would have to get eBay involved.
On the 4th day I used the eBay chat to talk to an agent who was very helpful and looked up everything and updated the item to picked up for me.
The payments went on hold and were paid into my account this morning.

so it worked out with the help of ebay.

still haven’t heard from the buyer.

its a shame you can only leave “positive” feedback.

Thanks all that helped

You have rewarded the buyer with a green tick and state they are deceptive etc etc

Against eBay policy

If the buyer reports it, or the eBay bots pick up on it, you will be the one in trouble

And pointless since nobody else except you and the buyer have a clue who the buyer is, nobody else sees the buyer's eBay ID

Sorry I didn’t know about the feedback policy. I wasn’t aware that writing accurate feedback was against policy I was trying to make other sellers aware.

What is a seller suppose to to if they have a bad experience with a buyer? Just not write any feedback?

It depends upon the type of experience.

Some sellers will leave automatic feedback upon payment, such as “Thank you for your purchase”. Some will only leave feedback for a buyer once the transaction is concluded and all is satisfactory.

But negative feedback for a buyer is out. Sellers cannot try to warn other sellers, or punish the buyer through feedback, irrespective of how ghastly the buyer has been. Give no feedback in such cases.

If the bad experience is a buyer’s non-payment, there is a better solution than feedback – it’s an invisible NPB strike resulting from seller cancelling the sale four days later due to nonpayment. Two of those strikes over 12 months will see the buyer blocked by all sellers who have set up their buyer requirements to automatically block bids from such buyers.

You leave no feedback at all

And as said, it is seen by eBay as a 'false positive' to leave anything but positive comments, and, again it does not help warn others what type of buyer it is as nobody else sees the buyer ID in question (no other seller is going to have a clue who the buyer is, and doubtful sellers are going to be reading through green ticks to see if there are 'false positives' among them

eBay has not allowed buyers to be given anything but positive feedback or no feedback at all for many many years

So all giving 'false positive' feedback achieves is, adding to the buyer's green ticks (which will only encourage dodgy buyers to keep doing it to others because they figure they can do whatever and get a green tick for it)

And putting your own account at risk of being pinged/sanctioned because eBay expects sellers to be aware of the policies they have agreed to

With such a buyer, put them on your blocked list, don't reward them with a green tick

Thanks for the advise much appreciated.

lessons learnt right across this sale.

i touched bases with EBay chat and owned up to a policy breach and they have removed my feedback.

thanks all have a great Xmas.
