VAT had to be paid by purchaser

My purchaser had to pay VAT for a purchase upon receipt despite them having paid for VAT at time of purchase. I have refunded them the amount but would like to obtain the VAT paid by them to eBay. Is there a way to obtain this?

I don't know why you thought it was your place to refund the buyer. You did not collect the VAT, eBay did; so if there was a problem the buyer should have approached eBay for a solution. I hope it was not a great deal of money because I think your chances of receiving compensation from eBay would be slim. My initial thought is that you have been scammed by a canny buyer who was "trying it on". That being said there are some countries that seem to have an unusual attitude to sales tax collected on eBay - Belgium is one, and one of the Scandinavian countries - I think Denmark. What country was involved?
