*****''''''OP for what its worth, my commonsense indicates that sending goods valued $200 unregistered without insurance is just foolishness IMO, and serves to lower buyer confidence (and spending) and does other sellers and ebay reputation a great disservice in relation to safe trading reputation.'''''''''*******

Firstly to thecatspjs ,IMO, the above statement you wrote made me LAUGH till I cried (thank you)!!!!!!

Secondly, my thanks to Brothers in Arms and others who gave me such stirling advice, which not only got me my money back but also an apology from Paypal.

I phoned PP after reading your post and it is indeed the case that a receipt which clearly states the postcode is enough to prove postage, the money has now been returned to me.Thank you very much once again.x

Hi, I recently sold an item on ebay, the buyer paid $200. I posted the item along with two other ebay buys. The other two arrived at their destination no problem but the item mentioned above did not. The buyer contacted me to say they had raised a dispute with Paypal. I contacted PP and told them I had the receipt showing date, time, cost and postcode where item was delivered to. PP said no problem you will be covered under sellers protection just download a copy of the receipt to us via the resolution centre. I did this, I have today received notification from PP to say they found in favour of the buyer. Now I understand I should have posted it registered, but surely there must be something I can do, I have lost the item, the postage and been charged sellers fees and yet the buyer only had to say they did not receive the item, how could they provide proof of not receiving something ??, surely we could all do that. Thank you

Unfortunately you can't do much about PayPal. PayPal seller protection requires registered post or click & send receipt.

But you can claim lost parcel to Australia Post. They will try to track it down. If you are lucky they might find the parcel. But if not there is not much you can do. Australia Post won't compensate for lost regular post parcel unless it's registered.

For a $200 item, you should have posted both registered & insurred or click n send with signature & insurance, even if you paid the few extra dollars yourself.

Don't post items via regular post if you can't afford the loss if they go missing.

WHY do others then go on to tell you what you should have done when you have all ready stated you know now it should have been registered.

Have a look at the buyer feedback left for others to see if they have a habit of this and also do a search on their purchase history to see if there is a lot of purchases they have not yet left feedback for.

It will be time consuming but if you can see a pattern then you might need to go to the online fraud police about it.

Hi greatgodpan, no doubt I'll be shouted down by the usual chorus of dissenting regulars but you ARE covered under the Paypal Seller Protection Policy and Paypal have erred in finding the buyers favour. This does happen frequently but to Paypal's credit, they are usually very quick to rectify the situation once the matter is bought to their attention.

You need to call Paypal, ask to speak to a supervisor and quote the following -

https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/customer-concerns#lb1 (scroll down to proof of shipment where you will find -

At the very least, your documentation must include the date the item was sent, plus one of:

An official acceptance by the shipper, such as a postmark or online status (status that shows the item was delivered is also acceptable), or

The recipient’s delivery address showing at least the state, city and postcode (or international equivalent), or

A receipt from Australia Post showing at least the recipient’s suburb, city or postcode (or international equivalent).

In the unlikely event that Paypal does not reverse their decision, inform them that you will be referring the matter to the Financial Services Ombudsman. Usually this is enough to get them to reconsider on the spot but if not, make good on your threat and the FOS will ensure that you are refunded.

It would also be great if you could post back here once the matter is finalised to demonstrate to the doubters that an Aus Post receipt with postcode is indeed sufficient to be covered 🙂

The above post is quite correct, but in addition to what was posted above, make sure the Paypal person to whom you're speaking fully understands that you are covered by the Australian Paypal terms & conditions, not the US ones under which your claim was wrongfully rejected.

That should be sufficient to have the decision overturned, but if not, the threat of a complaint to the FOS should see them change their minds pdq. 😉

It won't even get to the FOS because Paypal will reverse the decision once they realise they've applied the wrong policy to the claim. 🙂

by the way you are missing clause 1 in paypals protection policy in post 5, which sets out eligibility requirements for protection in the first place. This also identifies proof of addressee.

It's a bit of a stretch to suggest that a scammer would go to such lengths as to post something of identical size and weight to the same postcode in which I live. I suppose it's theoretically possible, but it's also possible that I could get abducted by little green men tomorrow, it's just a risk that I have to accept and if I'm not willing to, I ask for registered and insured (the parcel that is, not the little green men!)

I suppose it's theoretically possible, but it's also possible that I could get abducted by little green men tomorrow, it's just a risk that I have to accept and if I'm not willing to, I ask for registered and insured (the parcel that is, not the little green men!)

so the lodgement receipts you are talking about are different then, because the lodgement receipts that I receive do not record weight or dimensions ??

Mine do, I'm looking at one that I lodged today that says 'up to 1kg (scale)'. No it doesn't contain cubed dimensions (notwithstanding that it's under 1kg and wouldn't be cubed anyway), it was a throwaway comment but I'm sure you already know this 🙂

I'm not really sure why it's such a big deal to you anyway? Paypal's policy is in line with the various Sales of Good Acts Australia wide, it's not like they have an underlying agenda to screw the buyer. If they found in favour of the buyer in these cases, they would get sued, they would lose and it would cost them money so obviously they aim to minimise their exposure to potential litigation.

Buyers are not a protected species, they must assume some risk in a transaction, the law requires it to be so. You may not agree with that particular law but don't berate me, berate the legislators and hundreds of years of Common Law 🙂

No, I did not know that. I seriously thought that there might be differences in the receipts sent based on the claims in your post.

I can only hope that posters stop encouraging new OPs to pursue compensation and/or continue to send goods of value in an inappropriate manner - on the basis of this alleged loophole.

IMO It does not serve to create a safer trading place for all and build buyer confidence.
