(Printer) Scanner question

I did a heap of scans to insert pictures in my ebay listings but discovered they can't be used because the file size must be less than 7MB. The file size in my scanner produces 23.70:O

Can someone tell us how to adjust this for ebay use?

They are probably bitmap images, and quite big. You need to open them in a photo editing program, where you can change the size and file type - Paint is on most PCs and will do the job.

Open each file with Paint, click Resize and reduce the image size either by percentage or pixels (an image has to be at least 500 pixels on the longest side). Then open the menu and select 'Save As'. Name the file and change them to jpeg or PNG format.

All i needed to do was to change the percentage from 100 to 54% and the bitmap file to PNG in my HP Solution Center which reduced it to 6.96MB. Tried a listing and shes works perfectly, actually the loading has sped up in all areas because of it too. Very happy, Thanks DG

joz, that image size of 6.96mb is still extremely large. The bigger the picture size, the longer it will take to download on some people's computers.

If you go what Digi said, you will see they'll shrink to under 1mb in most cases.

is it arn1? ok, i can't work out what figures to put in, in the selection area dimensions and the output dimensions when i type 500 pixels for - H, i dont know what to type for - W, without distorting the picture, so it'd be easier for me to reduce the percentage only, when i do that it gives me an MB reading and i did have it down to 1 point something MB at one stage, but i dont understand what MB means, at 1MB does that still enable the buyer to zoom in on a large size picture in an ebay listing?

I may do this wrong, but I've never had a complaint re my photo's so this is how I do it .

Right click on the photo you wish to edit, choose OPEN WITH PAINT

When paint opens, click on RESIZE

Choose to resize via PIXELS

Change horizontal to 800 (vertical changes automatically)

Click OK

Save and choose JPEG

You'll see the picture is much much lower in mb's now.

To understand a MB, think of CM's - There's 100cm in 1 metre

There's 1000mb in a gigabyte (gb) and there's 1000 kilobyte (kb) in a MB

The lower the kb or mb, the small the picture file is.

A lot of my pictures are lower than 1mb but they are still clear, and can still be zoomed.

I probably didn't explain that very well but hopefully you get my gist.

hmm, ive right clicked one of those over sized scans, im on the paint page and on the resize option theres no choice for pixels just horizonal and vertical percentage. its at 100%, what should i place in the horizonal box?

that ^ was on my hp solution center page btw, i didnt think i needed to go and edit in paint, but might need to go the paint to edit the already oversized scans

In that same box where you are choosing to change the %, there should be a line "Maintain Aspect ratio" make sure this is ticked, and the other number will change all by itself.

if you change one it will automatically change the other from memory.

HP solution center is my software for my hp photosmart printer scanner cat

im thinking thats all i need to do in the future is to edit the scans from there so they end up in my scan picture folder?

im just trying to use the paint edit page just for these aready oversized pictures

Also, are you able to change the resolution for scanned images? The higher the dpi (dots per inch) the larger the file size will be.

If you can change these two options, give it a try and see if that makes any difference.

nope, quite basic, perhaps it might be quicker to delete all these already oversized scans, and re do them in my HP soft ware

yes there is, i used the PNG option but will try the JPEG

& from memory the dpi was 300

nah tried the 50% on the - H and it didnt automatically adjust the - W in paint, so i'll just delete those oversized ones and start again

A full size scan on my HP printer would be about 2000 x 3000 pixels, which would be 6Mb assuming no compression.

My pics generally go 900 x 1300. If the rest of the scanner bed scans, I cut the relevant bit out and reduce to 90% (in Paint). That gives me roughly 800 x 1200 JPEGs which run about 300Kb and provide ample detail.

And are quick for the prospective buyer to upload. I would back out very quickly from items that had 7Mb pics, due to the time AND the bandwidth gobbling.
