I have just joined ebay and listed an item to sell. However when I search as a buyer, the item doesn't appear.

What is the problem?

When did you list it? it can take up to 24 hours for a listing to appear. It depends on when the indexing sweep goes through.

Is it showing in your 'My eBay". If not, then you might not have completed the listing. Have you gone through the steps to register as a seller?

also check your email account associated with your eBay account as you will have received a confirmation email of your listing if it was successful.
