when someone buys and item from you, is period for collection 7 days from date of purchase?

It's however many days you specify in your listing. I usually ask for collection within 7 days of the end of the auction. If you haven't specified a time in the listing then mention it in the message you send to the buyer with your contact details e.g. "Please arrange collection by ... (insert whatever date you want)".

Just make sure your timeframe includes a weekend as a lot of buyers can only pick things up at weekends due to work hours.
