I think I have just had my first echeque.

buyer initiated payment on the 13th November.

I had the little hourglass symbol there and when I hovered over it said being processed through paypal, and gave me an expected clearance date of 18th. Had a look in PayPal and it said something like payment pending...

It has just cleared a few minutes ago, so now I have the solid dollar sign indicating item is paid for and it tells me I have to post it.

But when I mouse over the dollar sign, it says payment was made on the 13th.

So even if I post it today, it will still look like it took me 7 days to post it.

I hope thatmy postage time DSR's don't get dinged!

It was paid on the 13th, but the payment didn't clear until 18th, so both is really correct I guess.

I always send a contact note to the buyers who pay by echeque on the day the echeque clears - something along the lines of...

"Thank you for your purchase. Your echeque has cleared today and I have posted to you today also."

Trying to avoid that DSR problem you mentioned

I always send buyer who pay via eCheque a message ASAP after notification that lets them know I know they've initiated payment, that I'll post as soon as PayPal clear the payment and what they have estimated the clearance date range to be, and that they'll receive further email updates on the status of their order as it progresses (but that I'll be happy to answer any questions in the meantime) - hang leaving eBay / PayPal to create impressions re: postage time etc, for me.

We do the same. Send an email to say Thank you for your purchase. We've received notification from PayPal that you are paying by eCheque etc etc with the estimated clearance date and that we'll email once payment is received and their item posted.

Keep an eye on the dollar sign though because I think it actually updates to the date the payment cleared. Haven't had an eCheque lately so I can't confirm that.

my mum is correct though its still unfair to the seller, why should they have to be wary at all of DSR,s just because a purchase was made via a echeque. Seems bizarre that someone would need to fear retaliation threw absolutely no doing of there own. It should be payment made on the 18th that is when it cleared and was accessible prior to that it is simply pending meaning in a process of being fulfilled but not as yet complete. my mum has a point there should be a protection in place to protect the seller from unreasonable feedback being left due to an echeque delay. But what as they will just still leave it but say it was something else.

Buyers who pay via eCheque should receive two emails from PayPal - one at the time of payment, which (if they read it) lets them know the seller has been advised not to send until it clears. The second one is the notification that their payment has cleared, so if they pay any attention to their inbox at all, there's no reason to mark the stars for postage time down due to payment clearance time.

Cuts the dispute time frame a bit in a way, though, if the 45 days is counted from the date of payment but there's a week or so where nothing can really happen.

None of us are, but its really not about if they are smart enough to no better or not, its simply used as an excuse buy most, the others are just wired differently im afraid.
What has been highlighted here quite clearly is that eBay do not have a perfect system in place it is neither fair in some areas to the buyer and like wise to the seller as highlighted in this case.
It is these minor cringe worthy rules that continue to raise there ugly heads and fester each time eBay decide to add delete or modify rules and or policies to there system. It needs to be more transparent and honest towards all parties involved. They could start with opening there books to public scrutiny.

LOL - it was like they were trying to taunt me! It;s like "we have your money, but we're just gonna dangle it in ya face for a few days - now keep you're grubby little mitts off it whilst we wave it in front of your nose...

don't you touch it, noooo sirreeeeeee

and just when you think you might nearly get it, we might just take it back and say "just trickin'"!

I still have an echeque "awaiting payment" that has been cleared on Paypal and in my bank account for over a month. Ebay and Paypal have both thrown their hands in the air not knowing what has gone wrong.

It is a lot of years since I first used the term numpty or numpties on the boards and had many posts and emails asking what it meant lol. It is in very common use in the UK and it was funny to see it being used by more and more people on the boards.

As for echeques I cannot understand why sellers object to them so much, if a buyer pays straight away with one it usually clears in under a week which means it is cleared sooner than an instant payment made in the last few minutes of a dispute being closed and there is no chance of a bank chargeback.

I have had a few echeques in my time.

None of them bounced and none of my stars were trashed.

I wouldn't anticipate problems; enough come along anyway.

I do that too, but still get dinged in the DSR's for postage time - to the degree that now I often post before they clear. I know it's a bit risky, but to date I've never had an e-cheque bounce. I'm currently still sporting 1 low DSR for postage time from a buyer in WA (I'm in Brisbane), who took over a week to pay, then paid by e-cheque, and when I sent the note about waiting for it to clear, responded with a message saying it wasn't her fault because "there's money in that account".

I think some eBayers either don't understand the e-cheque process, and think they're sending someone (Paypal, eBay?) a message by dinging DSR's.

Here endeth the rant.

Marina.
