Scam/Phishing Attempt?

We received an email today with a HTML receipt attached.

The subject reads "Receipt for your payment to ****"

The amount is for $179.

The message says we have paid $179

But we dont know who they are and there is certainly no transaction in our PayPal account for any amount like this.

Of course the email looks very genuine and there are links embedded. Please DO NOT CLICK them.

Just wondered if anyone else is getting these. Looks like a phishing attempt to us.

I get them all the time and forward them - without clicking on anything - to phishing@paypal.com.au. They always respond confirming that it is phishing, and requesting that such attempts keep being forwarded so they can try to deal with it.

For this reason, I only deal with Paypal via the eBay site, not my email.

A general rule of thumb is if you haven't bought from the nominated seller, then it IS a scam/phish. By definition.

I have reported your post as you have provided a clickable link to the scammer, therefore aiding and abetting the scam/phish

So I thought paypal was suppossed to be a safe website. ???
I recieved the same thing today and must say I am utterly disgusted. Only by typing J.designs into google I stumbled on all these other people having similar issues.

So what are you suppossed to do?

I have followed one of the suggesstions and forwarded the email to paypal. When i tried to open it on my ipad it wouldn't let me and then trying it on my computer the whole email wouldn't even open. Find this all very strange.

Why are you blaming paypal for this email?

They did not send it and you are always advised not to click on any links in emails.

Surely the fact that you could not open it on your ipad or computer must tell you something.

The reason why the scammers keep on trying? They are after self-selecting scamees.

Contact Paypal and change passwords and maybe cancel/suspend links to bank accounts/credit cards. I don't know what info they asked for but if it has anything to do with your personal bank details, I'd also be phoning the relevant institutions, including Paypal, (they all have 24hour numbers for exactly this type of event), and explaining what has happened. If you do it straight away, you'll be safe.

i cant call them, paypal is closed, my account password has just been changed, and not buy me, i dont know what to do

I got one exactly the same. I used to live in Australia and still have an Aussie credit card so this freaked me out but I sent it to phishing@paypal.com.au for them to confirm whether it was real or not and lo and behold it is a SCAM.

i feel like an idiot, lol, alto my bank was quick in contacting me informing me that some western union thing has taken X amount and wanted to know if i authourised this transaction, naturally i said NO

you may have to change your ebay passwords and such too....phone ebay. I clicked on one of those once too....not exactly the same but the sale actually sounded familiar, I was in a rush, away from home....and boom. They hijacked my ebay account...although this is your paypal account...it will be linked to all your ebay stuff too...wouldn't it?? You poor thing.....ring your bank and change the account number or whatever, linked to your paypal account.....all those things...jilly

My work colleague also got this email from <removed> on the 20nov @0752 AEST. Have just put it thru to phishing at Paypal. Exact same money etc. Bogus phone number.

to all that read this thread . . . . this is why it is a good idea to open a bank account that is used only for your eBay activity.

I have a bank account that has a debit card attached to it. I use this for my eBay activity and top up the balance to about $200 when it gets low. The maximum amount that I could be fleeced of if my PayPal account was compromised is the balance in that account. When I know that I am going to bid strongly on an item and it will cost a bit I deposit more money into the account to cover the amount I intend to bid. If I don't win that item I can withdraw some/all of that deposit from an ATM so as to keep the balance in the account low. There is no way I could ever lose $770 as the balance is never up that high.

Another good reason for doing this is that I have a record of all my payments simply by looking at my bank account details. I don't have to sort through my main bank account details to find the ones that are eBay related.

I am not going to recommend any one bank, but I know that the NAB have a fee-free account and that Westpac have an account that has a $5/month charge. The NAB branch where I live closes at 4pm, which makes it hard to get to after work, and the Westpac branch is open til 5pm making it easier to get to for deposits. Pick a bank that has an easily accessible branch, or one that you already bank with so you can do an online transfer of funds.

Either spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com depending on who the emails are supposed to be from. Just forward the whole email.
