Selling items from a smokers house?

Hi all,

Not found any rules on Ebay about this, is there any rule saying you must state an item your selling has come from house where there is a smoker? Like a wooden furnture peice, stand, even though item has been fully cleaned up.

Just wondering, maybe similar to people who have wood fires on in winter., well kind of.

I don't know but if the item has a smell then that should be mentioned in the description.

Remember buyers are choosing to buy an item based on a written description and photos so things such as smell has to be mentioned or you could have problems with buyers wanting a refund or leaving negative feedback.

If you mention it has a smoky smell then the buyers really can't complain.

No there isn't or they'd have to include smells like stinky perfume,beer,pets etc

Its up to the seller IF they wish to put anything in their listings & up to a buyer to ask if something in particular bothers them.

When you create a listing you are told the seller is responsible for their listings so if the item has the stench of smoke then it should be mentioned.

There is nothing worse than opening a package and being knock over by that stench.

A buyer should not have to ask questions of the seller to know if their items stink of smoke.

As smokers would not even smell it them self as they smell the same and would say no.

There was a listing stating no pets or smokers in the house and there was a cat in the corner of the photo. Some seller do lie or leave out info to make a sale.

If you neglect to mention anything that should be listed in the listing then you run the risk of not as described problems and neg feedback.

I make a note that my household is a smoking one. I do try to minimise the chance of 'contamination', but I have no idea how successful that is because I smoke.

I once sold a film camera that smelt of cigarettes. I had a lower price on the camera because of the smell. I had in the description that non-smokers should take this into account and that smokers probably wouldn't notice the smell.

Anyway, the camera sold 5 minutes after it was listed, but mainly because of the cheaper price.

I think that if you sell something and say it is is 'very good condition' and not mention a cigarette smell then some would say the description is misleading through omission of information that a reasonable buyer would consider should be disclosed.

Every one of my 560 listings has the following:

"My items come from a home with over 200 non-smoking teddy bears, however their owner does smoke. Each item is aired outside before posting. If this is likely to offend you, please do not buy."

It is in italics so it does stand out. I do everything possible to eliminate any cigarette odour (non smoking craft room), however I am aware that smoke gets into everything. I'm quite often asked "wouldn't you get more sales if you left the smoking bit out?", and the answer is most probably. Someone once said "honesty is the best policy":-)

Totally agree motherbear. I once had somebody say "If it doesn't smell, don't merntion the smoking". My response was that I don't know whether or not it smells. It doesn't to me.

I am a buyer, am reading all this carp and wandering what else do the poor sellers on Ebay have to remeber "to mention" besides 1001 other non significant info when selling second hand goods.

Must admit haven't bought any furniture on Ebay, but if I did and was sec. hand I don't feel I would have the right to complain about smoking - especially if I didn't ask beforehand (if I was that paranoid about it).

What happened to the old fashion norm that you buy something old, take it home and clean it up as well as restore it if needs be?

The best stuff ever, magical really, was bought by my day in London Portobello markets, it stank of all sorts of things, had layers of dirt, like 50 years worth - even the aniquities shops stank from God only knows what, smell used to follow us home and linger for like 6 months!

I buy lots of china where there is usually no smell as the sirfaces aren't porous, but if I bought clothing or bedding or I dunno, whatever like that, I would wash it or air it - problem solved!

When I go shopping with friends, stuff in stores doesn't smell, we get in the car with our bags and the first thing someone does is light a cigarette!

And besides, even PP doesn't accept smell of smoke or any other smell from the household as not as described

I am highly allergic to cigarette / tobacco products, I want to know if the item I am interested i comes from a smoking environment!

There is also the issue of a plastic satchel sitting in the back of a van all day, especially (usually) if it's up the front of the bay where the engine is or it is a hot day. Allegedly that stinks worse than, but similar to, cigarettes.

So who is to blame there? The reflexive, what can I find to get some leverage, buyer would doubtless blame the seller.

MB it may not smell to you but to me it would stink, airing doesn't get rid of the smell and nor does washing to anyone thats affected by it, what I mean by affected is bringing on an asthma attack, and yes just the smell can do that

hawk - I have seen drivers smoking in AP vans so it's not always the seller's fault. Some people complain about the smell from a log fire - is the seller not supposed to keep warm during the cold weather? And, yes, I believe it is a different smell, but I've seen buyers complain nonetheless.

If you left me a neg, it would be removed on the grounds of you failed to read my TOS, which forms part of the listing:-)

Am I about to change my bad habit because of ebay buyers - not in this lifetime:|
