If that is your decision fine, but do you realise that eBay own Gumtree? and while you can list free there, remember there are hidden costs to make your listing stand out.

With all the free listings eBay are giving to sellers now it's an ideal selling platform - and the final value fees? no more or less than the big selling chains have to pay to their suppliers or did you think they get them free.

Maybe don't offer 'best offer' on everything and your profits might be able to handle the quite explicit (even to the point of telling you when you list an item how much you will pay if it sells) selling fees.

And when you are coming off a low base, don't alienate customers to the point of getting your stars trashed. At least one of which would probably get your account restricted. Maybe that's why you're heading elsewhere?

after using real Auction houses, yes I do find eBay fees ridiculous, ridiculously LOW that is.

auction houses charge between 15 and 20%.... eBay at 9.9% is a bargain

I quite like Gumtree for what it is - compared to eBay it is like sticking up a note in the corner shop window.

You get an awful lot of time wasters - people who arrange to come and have a look and don't turn up, people who turn up and then want to and dicker about price or split up items even though you've already said you were not prepared to negotiate (then they phone up next day and ask again) etc.

I listed a mattress for sale last week and even had a lady phone me to explain that she didn't know if she wanted a mattress or an ensemble........ Thank God I sold it because next day she rang me again to talk about it some more!

With Gumtree you get a lot of people who are just looking, at least with eBay you get buyers and I for one am quite happy to pay for that.

I'm kinda apathetic towards eBay fees, really. Well, to be honest, I'd rather not pay them, and in some cases I think they're a bit OTT, but I can work around that....and the alternative is less attractive to me (i.e. sell nothing here, and I do kinda like it here for the most part)

So, every now and then I console/amuse myself by looking at my account fees and going what!!? that's highway robbery - curse you, eBay!

Then I look at my turnover and go, well, that's alright then, and thank myself for sticking around.

I have no issue with the fvfs. Compared to this time last year I am much better off with the free listings and higher fvf. Last year 40 listings would have cost me $20 plus the fvf which from memory was about 5%, now it is just under 10% but I am not payng the twenty bucks in listing fees.

My turnover on both my store and auction listing ids is almost identical to last year but my total fees are quite a bit less.

You may be happy but plenty aren't

Pre April 2013 - FVF 7.9% - Max charge $100

Post April 2013 - FVF 9.9% - Max charge $250

so now an item costing $2525 costs $250 FVF compared with $100 April 2013, don't think your $20 saving in listing fees actually covers the 2.5x increase.

Plus beyond free listing entitlements auctions use to be $0.50 <$20 now $1.50 a 3x increase

My costs have also dropped remarkably.

$30 less for the shop, 80 free listings, 0.4% DROP in FVF.

Even if I sold $2,500 items, I'm fairly sure media didn't have capped FVFs. And I don't sell $2,500 books. I wish I did. Oh, yeah, I don't usually do auctions, either. Start at about 1/3 of market value and still can't get bids. I'll leave them at true price in my shop.

I've used both. used to sell some years ago on ebay under another name and have sold a few items on gumtree. It depends on what you are selling. If it is bigger items such as furniture or more expensive items, gumtree is fantastic. Quick results and no fees. I've used it to buy as well and it is possible to negotiate wih prices-like the old Trading Post.
But if you have smaller items to sell-maybe some clothes, shoes or whatever, it is a dead waste of time, ebay is better.
I have a theory on that. Who wants to drive somewhere to look at something that might only be about $10. Much easier to just buy straight out on ebay.
That's how I think people operate anyway as I have sold my bigger items fast but never a nibble on smaller items that sold fast on ebay.

If I was selling things for thousands of dollars I don't think ebay would be my preferred method of selling.

I don't anyway see why anyone must pay if they want to list more than 40 auctions, just use more than 1 id.

As I said I can only speak for myself and my business model and I am definitely better off now.

The OP asked if anyone else is finding the fvfs ridiculous and my answer stands, no.

No they are not ridiculous,they are basically the same amount as if you go to your local shop and get charged a G&S tax on everything that you buy and all business's earning over $75K also charge the tax,so Ebay is basically charging you a services tax

I sell most of my stuff on Etsy, and while the listing price is only 20c and the FVF is only 3.5%, to be found on Esty, you have to relist very often, so the 20c listing fee is multiplied by the amount of times you have to relist to be seen.

I am not complaining, but you have to pay to sell anywhere. If the terms of sale are not to your liking, don't sell anywhere that they aren't.

Selling sites are not a public service.

Well obver a 1000 sellers in collectables alone disagree with you.

Might work if your a small time seller but if have even a moderate number of line items its totally impracticable.
1000 line items divdied by 40 = 25 IDs for 10 day auction times 3 (to cover a month) = 75 IDs. Each with a email address the ISP costs alone would negate any advantage.

Sorry but Australian business selling on eBay is paying both ebay fees and GST, which are passed on to buyers, so you as a buyer are paying GST and eBay fees. The GST is only collected by the shops for the Government they don't get to keep it.

True and all businesses are entitled to earn a profit, but that doesn't mean that their fees aren't excessive, just that they are in a situation were they can get away with it.

FVF ridiculous probably not, excessive probably.

yeah i think it's ROBBERY 9.9%<--end auction price+ my postage costs,+2.6%paypal fees for a casual time seller who lists maybe 10 items yearly "it's beeen 2.5years since selling last and there is a reason for that", ebay is not for the small time casual sellers and is more focused on business type selling format and there is a reason for that GREED.

i dont intend to read what you yeah sayers are typing go ahead get robbed.

i only ever end up here when im looking for what ebay corporate has gouged me in my invoice.

sure its better to make 10 trillion dollars rather than 7.5 trillion but where is the social concience umm none as its corporate greed.

opinions are like a holes everyones got one, now i just gave mine.
