Australia Post putting off about 900 workers

Just heard this morning that AP are puting off about 900 workers , mainly in Sydney and Melbourne,

And also going to cut down normal delivery to 2-3 times a week.

Now items will take longer to get delivered, if not express. not sure when this will start, but thats 900 less jobs.

Not surprising though, they are getting worse. I had heard rumours from my local country store.

I live in the country, and still lucky enough to get mail every day. But only post 3 times a week, as my postie can't take any mail.

Having a lovely break at the moment, no sellers stress, but back to selling next week.

No Australia post still have to win approval to change government regulations on the 2-3 day delivery. So it's still in the pipelines so far.

Isn't the process becomming more automated anyways? Meaning mail sorting and all that jazz becomes obsolete as time improves?

I'm impress of how effective the automatic address readers are these days that can even read the **bleep**pist writing there is.

No doubt, which is why they have parcel lockers and now My Digital Mailbox.

Yet parcel deliveries are going to increase to 6 days a week at the end of the year.

Australia Post will deliver parcels on Saturdays and extend guaranteed next-day Express Post letter and satchel delivery to households six days a week from the end of the year. In addition, Australia Post corporate outlets will also open on Saturdays nationwide.

Australia Post provides six-day service during the Christmas period and from this year these will be accessible all-year-round.

"The extension of weekend trading is a direct response to customer demand. Our customers have told us that they would like to see more services from us and this is the next step in growing our offering to meet those expectations," said Australia Post Managing Director & CEO Ahmed Fahour.

"In addition to six days a week access to home delivery and stores, Australia Post has free access to online shopping Parcel Lockers that are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week across Australia in over 160 locations.

Well we have seen a dramatic decline in service quality over this past month or so.

Most of our items go out by large letters.

Up until about a month ago the AP loss rate on these was about 1 in every 500 we mailed out. Kind of acceptable to us!

Just in this past month or so that rate has suddenly gone up to around 1 in every 100 mailed out. Huge increase. Now unacceptable to us! About 60% of those losses are to QLD addresses.

Something has changed in AP's QLD delivery system recently.

Ditto we have had four lost large letters this year 3 to qld. We usually only have 1 or 2 a year. We send around 50 letter rate articles a month.

Not too fussed about the three delivery days instead of 5, as long as it is only on letters.

Parcel delivery days are going to increase, as the amount if parcels being sent are increasing in number, not declining hugely like letters.

Not good for the workers who will lose their jobs.

I dont know why people bother? Unfortunately Australia Post is a has been, once apon a time they were good, It's near impossible to contact customer support and they don't return emails, all i can say is give e-go a try they are part of the Hunter Group, i have received and used this company for sending stuff on hundreds of occassions without any issues over the last 2 years, e-go is cheap and 97% of the time your item is delivered in one piece. No body is perfect there are too many underlying factors out of their control. www.e-go.com.au

Thanks for that bit of info, I missed that. 95% of my sales are letter rate, 100-200 per month.but that will decrease as I run out of goods, only will be selling a few items once most gone.

Had enough of ebay and AP. I will not be having the digital box, I like to pay with cash over the counter.

I have only had couple parcels missing so far this year, and I thought they may have been on the truck that went on fire, but have now got feedback from some customers in NSW, but 2 still gone walk about. All posted the same day and in NSW also.

Okay guy's happy selling.

Only 900 … there is so much FAT at the top of Aust Post … it should be hundreds more … over the years management have promoted themselves to high wage positions where they basically do nothing … it is the workers on the ground who do all the work. The boss at the top gets $4.2 million … your average postie about $800 a week

And if they want to save money they should investigate how a seller can send something from the UK to OZ for $8.00 ... where if I was to send the same item to the UK, it would cost me approx $36.00 ... Aust Post are losing millions of $ delivering mail from overseas

more fudged figures to aim at the coalitions privatisation of AP plans.

They (the govt) have to get AP to be as profitable as they can so as to get the best price for it.

If that means continually upping charges and reducing the services, then so be it in the coalitions eyes.

Will we ever see competitive parcel rates in Australia - I don't think so

Apart from the fact that ego has, at best, mixed reviews, the use of a courier requires the seller being available for pickup at a fairly loosely defined time and the buyer ditto.

For those of us who have a day job, and for buyers ditto, a courier is not exactly useful.

And if I was to use a courier, I'd probably go through Temando, who are a broker and can get bulk discounts for eBay (and QS) members.

And I believe can get deals through Startrack, although I don't know if they deliver to Post Offices without a surcharge these days.

I have read a few posts in the past along the lines of......how ludicrous that Auspost is missing out on revenue when delivering overseas parcels to an address in Australia for less than it costs to mail something within Aus

Same plane / truck / fuel / sorter / postie ????? ....but have never quite understood the reasoning.

I just checked a book that I am about to list, weighs just under 1kg.

I looked on eBay for a comparison price and there is a seller in the UK selling the same book for $38.88 with FREE POSTAGE to Australia.

I have just checked Aust Post postage calculator. My cost to send the book to the UK, $39.10.

I'll try . . . . . in simple terms, countries that are party to the Universal Postal Union Agreement will deliver postal items that land on their shores without charging anything for delivering the items. All monies collected for the posting of items internationally will remain with the country that the item is sent from.

Each year there is a meeting where some "equalisation" of costs are made, but invariably Australia does not get adequate recompense for delivering mail that lands here from overseas.

The original agreement was struck back in 1874 when the amount of inbound mail probably equalled the amount of outgoing mail for most countries i.e. not very much. The advent of online trading has seen the costs to some countries becoming very unbalanced, especially for Australia where we have no 'land borders' with any other country.

China Post has really low international posting rates, which allows Chinese sellers to offer free postage to buyers from Australia (and probably everywhere else as well). This low postage rate allows China to encourage their businesses to sell internationally and thus improve their balance of trade though exporting so much stuff.

As an example of this, I recently bought two phone covers from China (for an outdated phone), and each one cost me $2.37 with free postage. There is no way that any seller in Australia can compete with this (not that I could find any seller selling a cover for this model of phone). The postage within Australia alone would probably have been more than I paid in total, yet Aust Post delivered the covers to me.

The equivalent situation would be where Aust Post was to offer posting to the UK for a matter of less than a dollar, and then once the item arrives in the UK then Royal Mail are obliged to deliver it no matter how much it costs them. However, in this scenario, Aust Post would only get less than a dollar, whereas by charging a realistic rate for posting to the UK they get to keep all of the postage charged.
