No problems here, and I've used Paypal numerous times yesterday and last night. Just checked it again now and it's still working fine. Have you tried deleting your browser's cookies and cache?

All you had to do was log into your router and password it to make it secure. When I first went aDSL, I didn't have a password on mine because I thought I had to put the password in every time I wanted to use it. Turns out that wasn't the case.

Given that half the neighbourhood has been accessing your unsecured router, first thing I'd be doing is changing all your passwords, especially net banking (which you should do regularly anyway). It may not just have been the neighbours using your connection. You'd be surprised how far away someone can be and use your connection with ease. My brother used to own an ISP and his best friend who lived 2 doors up across the road used to use his connection with no problems at all.

Just for the future, wifi connections through your router can be limited by the MAC addresses of your PC, mobiles, tablets.

MAC = Media Access Control

it is a unique identifier for the device. The router then has a list of the MAC addresses of allowed devices, once you enter them, and will block access by anything not on the list. Like a doorman at a club 🙂

another layer of security to prevent unauthorised use by others 🙂

That's an excellent idea, Amber. As chooks has quite correctly pointed out, your own WiFi signal can be received as far as 100m or more from your router which puts you within access of not just your neighbours, but also anybody driving around the area looking for a stray WiFi signal to try to hack or piggy-back.

When I first connected my laptop to the WiFi router, I was horrified to notice that aside from my own signal, there were six others with more than adequate signal levels to which I could also connect had they not been security-locked, including 2 others from Optus, 2 from Telstra, 1 from Sky, and another simply classified as 'unknown'. Surprised the hell out of me, it did.

I too was surprised when I bought my new phone in April, and was setting up the wifi for the home network on that, just how many arround me were detected. I know there are at least 3 houses in close proximity that don't have internet at all, so the signals must carry further than what we realise. These all had strong signals too, so could easily have been used had they not been secured.
