Seller Payment Email trickery?

Got an email from eBay telling me that

" credit/debit card declined eBay's attempt to automatically deduct the amount due"

Yes, it was really from eBay. So I checked my credit card and everything was fine. No reason for it to decline anything.

So I manually went in and paid the bill via eBay's system with my credit card. Went through just fine.

Rereading the email I noticed the following

"As a reminder, past due accounts may be restricted from buying or selling until payment is received.

Say goodbye to credit card finance charges by signing up for Direct Pay, the easiest way to pay your eBay seller fees To sign up, go to www.ebay.com, click My eBay at the top of the page, sign in with your eBay User ID and password, click the "Seller Account" link (beneath My Account in the left navigation menu) and follow the instructions for updating your payment method."

So my question to all of you ...

Did you get an email like this when you paid your last seller fees? Do you suspect as I do that eBay wants us all to switch to direct deposit instead of credit card? Maybe eBay doesn't like paying the credit card fees.

It would be interesting to know how many sellers were told their credit card rejected the eBay bill.

Pam

My fees come out of my PayPal account and if that is empty, it comes out of my linked savings account. That was how I set it up.

No, never seen that before. I too, have ebay fees taken out of my Paypal account. (defaults to savings, but I always leave enough in there for fees) I would think eBay prefer to take them that way.

You just made me think, though I lost my debit card and have just received new one (with different numbers & expiry date) I will have to update my payment details on a few places.. because payments will get rejected.

Another questioning the ebay.com (American) link. Mine also come out of paypal. If I received an 'odd' email like that the

first thing I would do is 'mouse over' (NOT click) any links in the email - quite often it will show up a link unrelated to ebay or paypal.

If it appears suss I make sure all headers are showing (check your email as to how to show this) and then forward it off to the spoof department of ebay or paypal! They can/will investigate and the headers give them helpful information. They will probably send back a response containing some helpful advice also.

In a practical sense paying from Paypal to eBay for fees generates nothing for eBay. No commissions apply , and they own Paypal. Even if they didn't, no commissions are charged by eBay for fee payments.

This was NOT a scam email. Like you I never click on links in an email.

So I checked the mail IN my eBay account. It had the same thing so the email was real.

My point is that the email IMHO was trying to get me to pay with Direct Deposit instead of VISA. Yes, I know it's easy to do it in PayPal and I used to do that. For reasons I won't go into here, I use VISA to pay eBay.

BUT ... eBay said that my payment was rejected and they would try again in a few days. That was followed by a warning that I could lose me account, and so on. All of which I knew.

Concerned I checked my VISA and there was nothing wrong with it. I tried paying eBay again with VISA and surprise it went through in seconds.

NOW here is my original question ...

======================

Did anyone using VISA to pay eBay get the same "your payment was rejected" email? Is this eBay's attempt to push VISA payers into Direct Deposit payments?

Pam
