Try using this calculator to get an idea. http://ecal.altervista.org/en/fee_calculator/ebay.com.au/

For example, if you sell an item for $100, you'll be paying about $14.45 in eBay ($11.39) and Paypal ($3.06) fees. So about 15% of what you sell goes to eBay and Paypal. This is a very large component of a sale when you take into account any profit margin you may have. The percentage and/or fees charge will be higher if you have to pay insertion fees, if you choose add-on features which cost more and/or if you have to add postage costs to the mix.

The fee percentage will be critical if you have a low profit margin because it is calculated on the TOTAL sale including your costs such as postage. So, let's say for example your $100 sale includes a 50% profit margin of $50 but your postage costs were $15.00, then once you subtract the eBay and Paypal fee from the $35.00 gross profit, you are left with about $20.00 over all take from the sale. This doesn't take into account your labour and running costs, such as petrol to lodge the parcel, electricity, printing receipts, phone calls or other communications after the sale, subsidized postage by overseas governments allowing their people to list items cheaper on eBay etc... Think very carefully about selling on eBay as a business venture as it could cost you more than what it is worth in the long term.

Which would be 'free' if I was selling something for $100.

Most of us aren't telepathic and it behoves those putting up numbers to justify them. Which neither you nor the main protagonist have done. if postage on top of $100 is included in the calculation that needs to be spelt out. ie What sort of postage? How much insurance? .....

Those figures MIGHT change the situation, but they need to be included in the calculation.

If you don't have a store, you get 40 free listings at the start of each month and once you use these up you start getting charged listing fees. Ebay of late have been granting random bonus free listings (usually 100-150 at a time for non store owners), but they generally have a limited shelf-life, 4-5 days only. The links to these are received by some in emails, but are almost always posted here in the forums, so keep an eye out for them. The last lot were a few days before the end of the month, but they expired last Sunday at midnight. If you have used all your regular monthly free listings , that would be why you are being charged.

If you go to your My Ebay page and scroll right to the bottom, you should see any free listings you may have available spelled out for you.
