Thumbs Down

Me sometimes think we need a 'Thumbs Down' button in here

I thought the purpose of these boards was to share experiences and ideas and help each other, which most posters do and I am so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to help me

I figure as it is theoretically at least a members area, (yes, I know eBay read it also) we should all be able to openly and honestly express our opinions without fear of being belittled & naturally in doing so, there will undoubtedly be a mix of positive and negative comments, but negative comments should not be directed towards each other. I think it would be nice if everyone could remember, we all have feelings & they can be hurt, some more easily than others.

There used to be the option for not helpful till the boards changed and it was removed as there was many doing the not helpful to answers that were 100% correct just because other member would gang up on some and this was their way of bullying anonymously.

But now as one can see who is doing what it has stopped

True. Unfortunately, there are the odd few, that will always take the opportunity to do so. Generally though, I think it's a great way to communicate and help out eachother and sometimes "tongue in cheek" have a bit of a laugh at ourselves.

Totally agree and it's great to be able to do that. I just get a bit upset and feel terrible sometimes when I read how mean some member are to others. Luckily though as you say it's only the ODD few. . . . . . I'm too old school - if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all - if you get what I mean 🙂

Oh, ok. I never used to look on the boards, then did for a while, but there was so much nastiness at the time I didn't bother coming back for ages, which is really a shame, because there are so many lovely and helpful people here. And yes, at least this way we can see who the bullies are, lol - you'd think they would have better things to do with their time

Mmmmmmm yes, I have observed some very unfair attacks. Its like the pitbull comes out in people sometimes...I was grabbed around the throat myself and shook vigorously until I gouged out an eye and broke free...lol

( not this id and not these friendlier boards) Power seller and seller boards are actually very tame.

We all need to get something off our chest now and again as WHO else can we talk to? OUR BOSS ?..The union? our wokplace relations officer or whatever they used to call it. Our spouse.. our kids So we dont deserve to be attacked within our own ranks. Admittedly we need sorting out every now and again when a rant gets heavy, but hey? Not smacked over the head with a bit of 10 x 4 .

No doubt things can always improve but looking back over the duration these boards are more civil now than they have ever been. It's a credit to the regulars that all the effort put into restarting these boards appears to have worked.

as sparklz wrote, the "thumbs down" symbol was being used inappropriately by many members. I recall one answer given in the Answer Centre regarding PayPal buyer protection that was 100% correct in every detail yet it attracted 9 thumbs down before I gave it a thumbs up.

Some members who are able to provide the best advice would stop posting as they also attract some criticism about the way they word their posts. If the "thumb downers" were able to be identified as the Kudos are then I think it would show distinctive patterns if it went they way it did before, patterns indicating hostility between members and not patterns regarding the usefulness of the advice given.

I give a thumbs down to the re-introduction of the thumbs down feature.

Fair enough - that explains well how it would defeat the purpose and the reason I thought of it in the first place.

The stirrers and hostility would not stop . . . . . .

Such a shame, because overall the community is awesome and so very helpful and kind. I guess it can depend on ones mood on the day, but I was scrolling through threads looking for some info and kept coming across the hostility and 'put downs' and felt so much of it was unnecessary. I suppose though, that's human nature . . . . . just look at all the hostility in the world today - sad

I've found the best thing to do is just ignore it. I got a few uppity replies to messages when I first joined the boards and wondered whether I should hang around. I decided to just ignore it because they are few and far between. I also thought that sometimes it's hard to put into text what you are trying to say and what might look like something hostile, isn't what the author intended. I have come across uppity a few time and didn't realise it until someone pulled me up on it. For the most part, the regular members here are pretty easy going and want to help others out. That's why they are regulars.

If there are particular members that you find are irritating you with the replies/advice they give you can have your settings so that you do not see their contributions at all. All you need to do is click on the user ID for a poster you wish to ignore, then over on the right hand side is an "ignore" button for that poster.

As far as I know that only applies to the Message system Sir Sales.

We can no longer Ignore the posts of members on the boards, much to the annoyance of some on the boards.

thanks lyndal, I don't ignore anybody so I didn't know that. I do read the posts of the type the OP is referring to and I pick out the important bits and ignore the carp.
